I am beginning my Junior year in a Mechanical Engineering program. I don't like it but I will finish it and graduate. I am thinking of maybe continuing my education towards Industrial Design. Is there a way for me to convert through a master and reconcile my mechanical engineering degree with a focus in Industrial design without having to go back to a 4 year degree?

I was in a special program in High School which allowed me to have 4 years of Visual art study.

Thank you for any information.

First, pick a few schools that have the Master’s program (Industrial design) and take a look at what’s required for a BS in that degree. Here’s a link to Georgia Tech’s:

[Program of Study | School of Industrial Design | Georgia Tech](http://www.id.gatech.edu/academics/undergraduate/programofstudy)

Try to take as many “core” ID classes as possible (as electives), if your school has an ID BS program.

Getting a BS in ME and a MS in ID is doable, but the additional classes will take time to complete.

Once again, from GT’s website:

"What if my undergraduate degree is not in industrial design?

The School of Industrial Design offers two types of graduate programs – a two year MID program for students with an undergraduate degree in industrial design, and a three year MID program for all other undergraduates. The 3 year MID students need to take additional 28 credit hours of preparatory coursework before taking graduate industrial design courses. The preparatory courses includes two design studios and 6 lecture courses; Materials and Processes, History of Modern Design, Computing 1, Computing 2, Advanced Sketching, and Professional Practice."
