Right now I am enrolled in my school Mechanical engineering school. I am in my 2nd year. I've been doing more research and learning more in my classes and I am not sure if mechanical is the right route for me. I want to have a job where I have the opportunity to work on different job sites and on the field. I would rather not be designing machines or systems. That being said should I switch to civil engineering? Would it offer me better chances to get on the field and work in a construction type setting? The civil engineering department also offers a masters in construction management, which sounds very interesting to me (if i decide to pursue my masters after i graduate).

It kind of depends what kind of job sites you want to work on. With a Mechanical engineering degree you also have the opportunity to go out into the field. Many are hired by chemical companies and oil and gas companies to help upgrade and maintain their infrastructure, working outside for half the day.

Don’t think because you have a Mechanical degree you will be stuck in the office all day. When you apply to companies make sure to tell them you are willing to travel. That’s a HUGE bonus if you are. Also, apply to positions where you will be in the field.

Also, give working outside a try first as well. I’m a Civil Engineering major and I’m about to wrap up my Masters in Structural. One of my first jobs was working at an offshore fabrication yard where I was outside for half the day. I loved it, but a lot of people absolutely hated it.
