Mechanical pencils and scantron

When you take a scantron test, is it ok to use a mechanical pencil? I know you are supposed to use a number 2 pencil, but do mechanical pencils us #2 lead? I was just wondering cuz I use mechanical pencils for everything but scantron tests, cuz I was afraid to take any chances with a test lol. But anytime I put wooden pencils in my backpack they always break. I know this is probably a stupid question by cc is the place for stupid questions lol.

Mechanical pencils do have #2 lead that can be used on scantrons.

Make sure when you buy the pencil, and the replacement lead it says #2 lead on it.

I always use a mechanical pencil for scantron tests. Make sure the lead is either 0.5mm or 0.7mm, because those have the same hardness as a #2 pencil. A lot of mechanical pencils will come with 0.5mm lead by default.

lol the #2 pencil thing teachers say isn’t completely serious. it’s somewhat of a blanketing general rule to prevent freak accidents, like the rule about electronics on an airplane. Do you really think playing pokeman green on your gameboy pocket on a flight will completely fubar the airplane’s navigation and communication systems?

back in the day, they actually sold pencils that weren’t #2. looking through my parents’ 80s vintage pencil bag, there’s no way some of those pencils will register on a scantron. that rule is from way back then, and kinda still sticks. these days, it’s very hard to buy any pencil that isn’t #2 and almost all mechanical pencil lead sold to general consumers is #2, hb, or around there. let graphical mechanica iron out the wrinkles in your daily life

What if the package of replacement lead doesn’t say what type it is? Like it doesn’t say #2 it just says 0.7

You’re probably still safe, honestly. I use the mechanical pencils I bought at the dollar store and I’ve never had an issue.

See my other post about that.

I always do my exams in mechanical pencil. If you look at the packaging on some of them they will even tell you they work on Scantron.

I haven’t used a regular pencil in such a long time. Mechanical pencils are fine.

If you’re not sure then buy those mechanical pencils that have the “Scantron safe” mark on the package. Anyone know what I’m talking about?
