med program choices

hey. ive recently received all the decisions regarding med programs. currently, im deciding between a few of them. i would just like to get some outside input from all of you. if you could, tell me which of these programs you would pick and why? this would be extremely helpful. thanks.

drexel/drexel
lehigh/drexel
vcu/mcv
stony brook ba/md
u. miami hpme

in addition, ive also been accepted to union/albany, rpi/albany, and slu medical scholars. but i have already sent withdrawls from these. hopefully, some of you on the waitlists for these programs will be able to get in.

vcu's program is no MCAT I believe, so that's pretty nice.

miami's hpme isn't as good as northwesterns, but a solid program nonetheless.

I don't know anything about stony brook, but the two drexel programs are both solid; depends on which undergraduate institution you like better.

congrats on your acceptances, btw, that's a good list.

I'd personally take either drexel/drexel or lehigh/drexel b/c I liked the drexel med school when we got the tour during the interview, and out of drexel/lehigh I'd probably take lehigh cause 2 of my friends are goin there to play football, one who is gonna most likely start this coming fall.

idk bout stony brook, and I didn't apply to VCU b/c I had never heard of it and b/c I thought it was a 3rd rate program; I found out later that was incorrect, however, and it's a mid to low 2nd tier program.

u miami's HPME would've been nice, but I didn't get my application before their ridiculous november 1st deadline. therefore, I know absolutely nothing about that school other than it's located in miami, and it's combined.

So yea, i'd take lehigh/drexel or drexel/drexel out of those 5.

also, does anyone have any information on merit scholarships for medical school? do schools award these scholarships or are they even available at the schools listed above? any posts from hydrogen3k or any others would be appreciated.

i personally like slu medical scholars which is why i chose that over lehigh/drexel. but thats a personal preference.

i don't think drexel medical school is that appealing, except for the fact that all lectures are online. but thats going to be available at any school soon.

for hpm, you need a 3.7 average which is only a-/a or else you're out immediately. i'm assuming you could probably do it, but its still stressful to think about. plus you have a minimum mcat

lehigh/drexel you need a minimum 30 mcat. there is no point in doing a "straight" med if there is a minimum mcat score. the point of the programs should be to relieve some of the tension with applying to medical schools. Nobody studies for an mcat to get only a 30. its either you care or you don't.

people seem to like stonybrook. it does have a pretty good medical school but thats all i know. i don't think vcu's program is that appealing

sorry if this sounded biased or too blunt. you wanted suggestions so i gave them to you

thanks for the reply l0vevik. anyone else have any thoughts?
bump.

no problem.

i've never understood what bump meant

bump = Bring Up My Post

i know for drexel/drexel (i'm assuming it is the same for lehigh/drexel as well) that you need a 9 on each section, OR over a 30 with at least a 7 in each section.

a 30 on the MCAT plus a 3.5 GPA (drexel's requirement is like 3.45 or something, with no grade LESS than a C (meaning you can still get a C)) will most likely not get you into drexel's medical school.

also, the lack of being forced to do a bunch of research ECs frees up a lot of time in the undergraduate schedule.

l0ve, I also wouldn't completely bash a medical school without at least visiting it first. I visited the drexel COM, and the entire school is in one building, meaning no walks through weather to get to class; once you get into the building itself you're fine, the only walk to dread is from your apartment to the medical school.

again, don't know enough about stony brook or vcu to comment.

sorry, i didn't want to sound that way,

i visited drexel com and yes, it is an amazing environment for certain people. maybe aesthetics plays a bigger role to me than it does to you lolol..

sorry about that though

I personally would not choose the drexel programs. They are heavily overpriced (60k a year for drexel med and 30-40k a year for lehigh) and drexel med school is not that great. I'd say stony brook and VCU are your best choices. If you like warm weather, than Miami is a good pick.
