Med program

can someone tell me about the pre med program at VCU?? I was hearing something about VCU being a good place for kids who want to be doctors to do under grad, why?

Because it has a combined BA/MD program. That's why. But the program is very competitive and often has people pick it over top 25 schools. Other than that, VCU isn't any better than any other school in its range for "premed."

cavalier, do you know where i could find more info on their BA/MD program? Particularly on admission into the program. I've tried looking on vcu.edu but I can't seem to find it... maybe I just suck at navigating their site...

Shazilla, I got a lot of mail about the program when I was in HS. It has an admit rate of about 20% and the typical accepted student is top 5%, has above a 1450 (m+v) and has several hundred hours of medically related ECs. Needless to say, they're pretty far above the average VCU student.

:( i only have a 1380 M&V (will retake october) and am only in the top 10% of my class... worst of all i have no medical related EC's... i never thought the program would be THAT competitive, considering I had never heard anyone mention it before last week and considering the fact that I live in VA.

Cav, do you know if you can transfer into the program if you choose to go to VCU or do you have to be admitted directly into it from high school?

Dude, of course it's competitive. It guarantees admission to a very good medical school. Do you realize how competitive medical school is to get into out of college? It's much, much harder than getting into ugrad colleges.

You might still have a shot - I don't know. It's probably worth applying to, anyway. At worst, VCU would probably give you a hefty bit of scholarship money.

I don't think that you can transfer into the program, but I could be wrong. I don't think it would be worth going to VCU on the hope of transferring in. If I were you, with the goal of going to medical school, I'd shoot for a school along the lines of UVA or W&M.

Hey cav, I found out that they allow students that are enrolled at VCU to transfer into the Honors Program even if they were not admitted straight out of high school. I also found out that if you graduate from the VCU Honors Program you are guaranteed admission into all of their professional schools, including the School of Medicine. So, do you think the Honors Program sounds like a solid deal to a person interested in a medical career? Also, the Honors Program is entirely different from the BS/MA thing, right?

Are you sure about that? I doubt that they would offer guarantee admission to their average honors student...

I found this on their website:

<a href="http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/honorsprogram/prostudents/guaranteedadm-trackmed.asp%5B/url%5D">http://www.pubinfo.vcu.edu/honorsprogram/prostudents/guaranteedadm-trackmed.asp</a></p>

It doesn't look like anything worth shooting for unless you get into it right out of high school.

With your numbers, you should look primarily at UVA and W&M.
