Hey guys,

I am a regents dude for UCB and will prolly go there now.
So, are there any programs for bio/med research that I can apply to so that I can do research in the summer?

Thanks

Undergraduate Research @ Berkeley

Good luck with finding positions. It will be difficult for you unless you have had extensive prior experience.

yea i checked that page out...
any other suggestions?
and yes, i do have prior experience. Siemens semi-finalist etc etc

You should send e-mails regarding getting a summer position to PI's who you are interested in working with.

I arranged my research position before I actually decided to attend Cal but I didn't do research there the summer before my freshmen year. However it's very unlikely that they will pay you since you are not that familiar with the lab and you would spend most of the time learning new things.

What about for a freshman who has a low GPA in bioengineering (3.0)....any hope for a research position?

for me, pay is pretty important, so looks like theres no hope?
Emiko, how did you arrange it and where did you do it? Were u paid?

I don't think there are many, if any, paid research positions for undergraduates, let alone entering freshman.

The only paid lab positions are for technicians who clean the equipment and whatnot.

Yeah the labs are not allowed to pay students during the semesters. Some students get paid during summer but the positions are often very limited and you need some seniority to be paid I guess..or anyways you need to convince the PI that you are valuable enough to be paid. I would highly doubt that they would pay students who are just starting.

You can try to look for scholarship like the Biology Fellows Scholarship for your summer stipends, but since you are not a Berkeley student yet, you probably are not qualified. Besides, even if you are a Cal student, those scholarships are pretty competitive as I understand (a lot of seniors, juniors who have previous experiences are interested in applying as well)

I arranged my position at Cal just by sending the PI e-mail... I am lucky enough that my PI decided to pay me instead of the other like, 5 or 6 undergrads in the lab this summer. If you are asking about the pre-frosh year, I returned to the NIH lab I worked at previously. The pay at NIH is about $2000/month I think. It's really good pay considering that there are many juniors/seniors at Cal getting paid like $2000 for 10 weeks working in summer. If the stipend is important, I would highly recommend working at NIH. However... the summer student positions at NIH are pretty competitive too and it might be a little late now to start applying. When I first applied for the internship at NIH, I started probably during Christmas and I was told by many PI's that the spots were already taken......

: )) It might seem hard but if you want it so much, I am sure you can get it.

what is NIH? are you a senior emiko?

URAP also gives stipends to selected students during the summer. The website says the stipends are limited, but it just so happened that my two research peers were paid for conducting research the previous summer.

NIH= national institute of health
