Med School after West Point?

<p>I hear the competition for medical school slots are tough at West Point and about 20 people get in. But I also heard that the reason why the number is so low is because less than 20 people even apply. Is this true? If I go to West Point for premed, will I automatically go to medical school afterwards or serve in the army first?</p>

<p>You need to check what’s happening. My understanding is that this past year, everyone from the Naval and Air Force Academies who were admitted to med school got to go - it seems the services aren’t getting the same amount out of medical ROTC as they were at one time. Of course, what happens four years from now could be another story.</p>

<p>For Med school at USMA, generally there are two pre-requisites that need to be filled. First, like any commishining source, you actually have to get in to a medical school. This requires you to take a science major with the required classes or take another major and take the classes as extra elective (Organic Chem I&II, Cell Biology, and Anatomy are the four classes med schools require). Then you need to go to an interview with West Point staff/faculty where they will decide if they will let you go straight to med school. You’re right, it is usually limited to 20 people per year. I have an excel file that lists the branching results from our school for the last four years if you want me to PM/email it to you. 2010 had 13 people go straight to med school, 2009 had 17, and 2008 had 21. However, if you are not approved by USMA to go to med school, but you get into med school, you can formally request from your branch to attend at the conclusion of BOLC or even further into your career. Then it is up to you working with your branch and I dont know enough about that aspect to really get into any detail about it.</p>
