Med School Chances

Hi, I'm a 21 y/o Biology major at UTK interested in attending med school. The problem is that I think I've tanked my GPA too far to be competitive. I've started my sophomore year of undergrad and I currently have a 3.0 gpa. I've made a "C" in chem 1 2 along with the labs; and a "C" in Bio 1. I've made an "A" in Bio, and Ecology. I work full time as an EMT paramedic and host non-profitable CPR classes to churches and schools in the summer/spare time. Before I was a full time paramedic, I had to start as part time while in undergrad ( working whenever they call me in regardless of school or not ). This hurt me as I couldn't develop a study plan , and had to be late/ leave early during classes because of work. I now have a set schedule and have developed a study plan, but I'm afraid it may be too late for my GPA/sGPA to be competitive. I would like to say ill make straight A's from here on out, but life happens. Do you guys think I have a shot at being a competitive candidate? Advice on what I should do to make up for low GPA? What extra ECs do you advise I do, my time is limited working full time and teaching classes already. Thanks!

Also I was planning on advancing my EMT-p education to critical care paramedic this summer if that helps any.

Well what’s your mcat score? A lot of people recommend going to grad school (a short 1-2 year program), and that sounds like it’d help.
I know people like to do a gap year and work on research, you could also look into this, but since it’s your gpa and not your ECs that are the major problem, I’d say go with the grad program.

A 3.0 makes it very unlikely (but not impossible) that you will get admitted to a medical school. A high MCAT score may help some, but the odds aren’t really in your favor. Dina4119 brings up some good points in her post.

I don’t think all hope is lost. You’ve only completed one year of college. You have 3 more years to go.

You do need to take more BCMP classes (and ace them) in order to dilute those C’s.

I think that if you do well from now own, apply AFTER graduation, and do well on the MCAT, you could get admitted to a Tenn public SOM.

OP,

Unfortunately, with a 3.0 cGPA and that many C grades in the pre-reqs even a very high MCAT score is unlikely to help you get into an MD school. If money is not an issue, seriously consider the Postbac/SMP/PG route.
