I'm a junior at wayne state university (failed a year of high school) majoring in chemical engineering. Have an approximate GPA of 3.8 (B in an english course), A's in all pre-med courses, a 34 on the mcat (10 verbal, 12 bio, 12 physical), an associates degree in surgical technology (earned most of it thru dual enrollment while in high school), 2 years of full time experience as a first scrub (40hrs/wk while going to school full time), and no volunteering or EC's. What are my chances of making Johns Hopkins Med School or University of Michigan Med School?....Thanks

Wow, excellent numbers. Your pick of many, many schools -- but you're asking specifically about Hopkins and Michigan.

3.8/4.0/34 with good clinical experience but no research is a near absolute no-go at Hopkins barring some amazing soft factor (race, in particular). Michigan is tricky -- if you're a Michigan resident, I'm not that familiar with their admissions standards. I'd still be skeptical. But if you're OOS, I think you're -- again -- dead in the water.

Michigan is one of the few state schools in which having in-state residency is not an overwhelming factor. It's still an advantage but not as big as many others.

I'm worried about your complete lack of EC's, but the working full time makes up for a lot. You're at the hospital a significant portion of time already - any chance you could stick around for another 2 or 3 hours a week? I'd try to aim at something with a lot of patient interaction - if your hospital has a "sitter" program that would be phenomenal. You sit in patients rooms, talk with them, help them feed themselves, occasional help clean up, and it would be a great complement to your ST duties (because you get a ton of time with surgeons). Often times these are paid positions but you could see what your hospital would let you do...It doesn't hurt to ask.
