Currently, I am contemplating on going to med school. I am a 1st semester sophomore. I have not taken any science classes yet but I have taken calculus.
My GPA at the moment is a 3.6 and I have only been taking the classes I need to graduate. I am thinking about majoring in biology. I do find it interesting.
There are a few problems that I am having. I know I will definitely be able to bring my GPA up. The easy part for me is the grades, the difficult part is everything else like the soft stuff. Besides great grades, what should I do? I am not a part of any clubs or have any real experience.
At the end of this semester I am thinking that I have 2 years to build myself up. I want to show med schools that I am committed and a valuable candidate. I just do not know what to do.

You need all of the following:

— physician shadowing so you understand what the career of a physician entails

— clinical volunteering so you have hands on experience dealing with the sick, injured, disabled and their families

— clinical or bench research so you understand the scientific research process, it flaws, pitfalls and its potential

— community service to demonstrate your willingness to be of service to others

— leadership positions to demonstrate that you can be a team/group leader (medicine utilizes team-based approaches so you need to be able to show you can handle the responsibility of leading a medical team of doctors, mid-level providers, medical technicians and other healthcare support staff)

— strong oral and written communication skills
