Hi, I am a pre-med sophomore @ Rutgers. I was looking over a few med school admissions web pages and a lot of them say that students who receive AP credit need to make it up someway or another. I AP'ed out of Biology, Chemistry, and Physics (we receive credit here, not just placement). I am majoring in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry (that's just one major), so I am still taking quite a few science courses. The science courses I plan on taking (or have taken) at Rutgers are:

Organic Chem (w/ Lab)
MBB (w/ Lab)
an MBB seminar (probably Proteomics)
Genetics
Physical Chemistry (full year)

Will this be sufficient or do I need to check with the specific schools?? I feel like I won't satisfy their chemistry w/ lab and physics w/ lab requirements. Thanks for your help!!

PChem should have a lab. If not, biochem might. And if not, then check but those should cover you regardless.

And you'll need a year of physics.

Biochem has a lab (so that will definitely satisfy Biology.) Can it satisfy chemistry too?? haha...

I suppose I can take the Pchem lab (counts for physics, maybe???), I just really didn't want to since it's not required for my major. I still need to talk to my advisor about this, but I posted here before I had the chacne to just because I was thinking about this right now.

I dunno... this is confusing. It's kind of dumb that I would be required to take these extra courses when I clearly demonstrate science proficiency and will have worked in a lab for ~3.5 years after I graduate (and write a thesis). Also, I'm sure I'll show that I know the material on the MCAT. blah

Biochem is generally regarded as chem, not bio - it definitely won't count for both.

PChem will probably be chem, not physics.

Anyone else have any experience with this problem? I'm meeting with the pre-med advisor next week though, so I'll let you know how that goes.

You can get a bachelor's in biochemistry with just these courses?

Organic Chem (w/ Lab)
MBB (w/ Lab)
an MBB seminar (probably Proteomics)
Genetics
Physical Chemistry (full year)

Well, no, but I AP'd out of a lot. Besides those courses, I need to do research, take calc 3, and take 2 1-credit seminars my senior year. By the way, when I said Proteomics was a seminar, I meant an elective. But that really doesn't matter at all for you guys, it's just terminology for Rutgers.
These are the major requirements: http://mbb.rutgers.edu/major/undergrd.html

So, I AP'd out of bio, chem, physics, and calc 1 and 2. That's four years of coursework I didn't have to do, which in turn allows me to double major in philosophy and study abroad (which biochem majors can't do if they come in with no credit).

However, I'm still worried about whether I'll need to take more physics and chem. Med school websites seem to be pretty clear but the secretary I talked to said I don't need to take more physics/chem. We'll see though, when I talk to my advisor next week. Anyone else want to weign in?
