Med school? Student Body?

I was wondering, is Wes a good undergrad before med school? I know that in order to get into a good med school, your gpa has to be almost if not perfect. If I get in, I would be in between Wes, Rutgers, and TCNJ (basically free). They're all supposed to have good rates of success with medical school, but some insight would be nice!

Also, I'm African American and I know that the majority of the student body is caucasian, but could you say that there is a significant population of African Americans? What about other minorities? An estimation would be nice. Please and thank you!

Wesleyan is only about 60% white with the rest of the student body spread between Hispanic, Asian and Asian American, African descent (excluding internationals) and people who self-report as mixed race, probably in that order.

Getting into medical school is largely a matter of grades and MCAT scores, but, you also have to factor in fit because you’re not likely to get good grades if you’re unhappy in your environment.

Wesleyan is a very diverse place, as John indicates, and typically about 10% of the class is African-American. When I was there back in the early 70’s my roommate was African American and he is a very successful physician today. I strongly suggest that you try to visit Wesleyan while classes are in session, go on a tour, talk to some students and see how you feel. You might also consider contacting Ujamaa, the Wesleyan Black Student Union, which has been a vital force on the Wesleyan campus since the 1960’s.
Good luck!

Wesleyan is nicknamed “Diversity University”. Definitely head over to ***** and you’ll see why. It’s a fantastic place for not only physical diversity, but also intellectual diversity. I’d choose Wes over Rutgers and TCNJ (med school acceptance rates are higher as well - check AAMC).

Wesleyan has fantastic med school acceptance rates. Keep in mind most medical schools have average GPAs in the 3.7 range, so you don’t need a “perfect” GPA to get in. A good MCAT score (>30) is a must, and combine that with a GPA >3.7 and solid recommendations, and you should have no problem. A 3.7 (pick any number for that matter) at Wesleyan will be given greater weight than a 3.7 at Rutgers or TCNJ.

Hey Kikiya,

I went to Wesleyan and graduated in 2008, I’m now a second year medical student at a US medical school in close proximity to Wes. Wesleyan is a fantastic school for med school admissions. You will definitely need to work hard and get good grades, but the school’s curriculum is wonderful and the individual attention you get from professors and plentiful research opportunities will be really helpful when you are asking for recommendation letters. Also there is a fantastic pre med advisor Dr. Peggy Carey Best at Wes. She is like a mother! Very caring, knows the med school application process really well and will become your best friend when applying. Wesleyan is known by many US med schools for having a rigorous curriculum. As a pre-med, I sat down with a US med school admissions dean and expressed concern about my gpa which was 3.6 at the time and this particular med school’s avg was a 3.85. He asked where I went to school. when I told him it was Wesleyan, he told me that it was a great GPA for Wes and that they take academic reputation of the undergraduate institution in consideration when looking over an applicant. He told me Wesleyan has a fine reputation in the med school admission circles.

Want more proof? In my med school graduating class alone there are 4 Wesleyan students. The class above me has 5! All of them were my good friends when I was a pre-med at Wes and one was even my biology project partner! Hope this helps.
