Med School Talk

So I’m a sophomore at a smaller university (not really nationally recognized). I chose that university because it fit my tastes better than some of the larger schools like University of Minnesota or Iowa (great schools just not for me). I currently double major in biology and psychology, have a 3.75 overall gpa with a 3.55 science gpa. For EC’s I am in my schools Biology club, PT club, and global medicine club. For shadowing and observation I have a job where I work alongside a Dr., I count these as shadowing hours (I have around 300 so far) and I also volunteer as a PT aide at a local nursing home. I usually work my shadowing job 24-32 hours per week during the semester, PT aide for about 8-10 hours per week, and TA for my bio professor for 3 hours a week. I am currently applying for internships in medical research which I feel would elevate my application enormously. Next winter I plan to travel to Panama with my global medicine club to volunteer at the local hospitals. I am also planning on getting my EMT license this fall. I have not taken my MCAT yet, but I have started to study. As for my gpa, it is currently on an upward slope since my first semester. I’m not trying to get into an elite medical program, I am just looking to get into one medical school. If anyone can give me any feedback or suggested schools I’d really appreciate it! Thank you for reading!

It sounds like you are very dedicated and passionate about studying medicine. I only hope that I will be able to be as involved and motivated as you. I recommend continuing to study for the MCAT. It seems like you have pretty much everything in place. As far as what schools to apply to, I don’t really know, but you could always try for state programs in an attempt to save money. Good luck.
