Med School Visits....better to have parent along?

Hi,
does anybody have any thoughts on parent going along to visit med schools or should prospective applicant go alone.....I just don't want to make him look weak or immature. thanks for any insights :)

Alone. You’ve done your job well now let him go.

Aww thanks Balto, he wants me to go along, and I WANT to but not if it will hurt his prospects.

We know a few young students in med school and none of their parents went along since there were multiple med school interviews all across the country. It was just too expensive. However, if you won’t be seen by any school official (don’t go near the school with him) I don’t see why you couldn’t go and explore on your own.

Thanks Breeze, this is sort of an informal walk about thru the school…although with todays security I don’t have any idea what is required to access buildings ? He is home on a fall break and wants to get a feel for the schools, location, etc.

That sounds fine to me, as long as you are not planning on interacting with any school personnel. If he’s going to sit in on classes or meet with anyone (even informally), you need to go sit in a coffee shop for that part.

My kid wants us to drive her to those that are ~400 miles away. Those that are nearby, she’s going herself. We don’t have any plans to be “around” at the interviews.

It’s nice that he wants your company. Stay invisible if he has interactions with the schools and enjoy your time with him.

Thank you, thank you, thank you :)

We seem to be talking about 2 different scenarios. I believe the OP is talking about an informal informational look-see for fun-sies while others are talking about med school admissions interviews.

As to the OP’s question…sure, why not? But the security is quite tight at many med schools and access is quite limited to buildings.

I take my D’s admissions interviews in Texas as opportunities to see her and provide taxi service from the airport but …I would never let them see me. I really think that would be bad idea. She flies to the OOS interviews, takes shuttles, buses, and cabs and is quite a capable traveler.

As a matter of fact, I’m with her now as she just arrived for her 10th interview  of the season and I’ll put her back on a plane cross-country Sunday for 2 more next week. When does she go to class? Hmmmm. I’ll have to ask. Maybe I should remind her that she actually needs to graduate to attend.

Curm, I appreciate everybody giving their input for BOTH scenarios  Good luck with all those interviews !! WOW ! Hopefully my son will be doing the same thing one day soon.

My DD has one interview a few hours from our home and I will be driving there with her, enjoying the visit on the drive and dropping her off a block from school (just like junior high!) and running errands in that big city, but not being seen or even seeing the med school.

Only if your name is Doogie Howser.
