Hey right now I just finished up my first semester in college I am a biomedical engineering major premed. I was not happy how I did first semester in my science classes C+ in bio B- in chem lecture and A in chem lab. I will give you a brief explanation. This was my first semester and I was getting used to everything also I was having problems with doses of some of medicine I take for a neuromuscular disorder I have. i am doing the biomedical engineering because I have a biomedically implanted device in. Do you think my performance this semester is going to rule me out of med school my GPA was a 3.1.

I wouldn't say it rules you out, but you should also bear in mind that med-schools don't have a lot of mercy to those who get low grades, whatever the reason might be. You could try explaining your special circumstances in an essay or whatnot, but that may not be particularly helpful because the reality is that if your overall GPA isn't high enough, then your application will get thrown away before it's ever read by a human being. That's the harsh reality of med-school admissions - numbers are king. Bottom line - if you still want to go to med-school, do whatever you have to do to get your grades up. If that means taking easy classes, so be it. If that means transferring to an easier school, then so be it. If you still want to be a doctor, then you gotta do what you gotta do.

I love my major and my school. I believe my circumstances through my disorder have called my to where I am. My doctors helped me so nothing like forst semester hapens again. Any other advice

Well, if you like your major and your school, then obviously you should stay there.

Just don't get your hopes too high. Med-school admissions is a harsh, harsh process, and the fact is, your first-semester grades are going to hurt you. There's no point in beating around the bush about this point. They're going to hurt you. Now can you overcome it? Sure. But you will have to work hard pull your GPA up. Like I said, if you don't have a strong GPA, med-schools aren't going to really care why you don't, they're just going to reject you without thinking twice. You gotta pull that GPA up.

thanks I really appreciate your comments

You should retake those classes in a summer session and show the med. school you are dedicated to mastering the subject and you should also make sure that you do well. You need A's in science classes for most med schools to even make the original cut.

ok thanks so much for your input.

I got a D in bio this year. I'm retaking it and will do all I can these next 7 semesters to get into med school. I know it'll be tough, but I just need some faith and better work habits.

But just in case...time to think of a back up plan.
