Med school?

Hi I'm just wondering do you guys know anyone who made it into medschool after 4 years at Tech? I'm a current freshman and I want to be an MD but people say that I could be overlooked by med schools because I would be going to Tech. I have a full ride to Tech. Not trying to offend anyone or anything but I just want to know if I should go there or not. Also does anyone know the percentage of Texas Tech premed students that make it into medschool? Thanks.

*I meant I’m a senior in high school. Going to be a freshman this fall.

Not a med school student, but I do think Tech has their own med school. Just a thought.

I’m currently a Pre med student at Tech, and I know plenty of people who have been accepted into med schools that went to Tech. Many go to the Texas Tech Med School(which is great; don’t overlook it), but I know some that have got into UT Southwestern, Baylor, UNT HSC, and more. There is no lack of Pre med students at Tech, and the academics are up to par with the other Texas public schools in my opinion. I too chose Tech because of scholarship offers. I honestly feel that I have more opportunities here at TTU for my career choice than I would at A&M,UT, or any other large TX school. Have you heard of the UMSI program? Definitely google it; the deadline is soon. It is a program you apply for in your senior year of high school which guarantees you admission to the Texas Tech Med School and waves the MCAT requirement. They only select a handful of people, but I do know quite a few people in it currently if you have any questions. It is a fantastic opportunity that you should try for. Also, the honors college has an Early Acceptance to Med School Program (which you can also google) that you can apply for junior year of undergrad. This also gives you acceptance to the TTU Med School and doesn’t require you take the MCAT. Texas Tech no doubt has plenty of opportunities for their Pre Med students, and I believe that it would not hurt your chances at all by attending TTU for undergrad.

Oh nevermind about UMSI, just saw that you said you were a freshman. But you can still try for the honors college program.

Thank you so much that helped alot! What are you majoring in for premed? Have you done any research at Tech? Im getting most of my tuition paid for, don’t remember the name haha. I’ll look into honors college, is there still time to apply? Are you in any of these programs?

Are you staying at Tech all 4 years btw? Just wondering

I’m majoring in Biology. I haven’t done any research yet because of my schedule, but I do have some Pre Med friends who have done some research through the Psychology department and through the honors college programs. If you show an interest there is usually someone willing to help you get a research position. Yes you can definitely still apply for the honors college. Double check for sure, but I think the deadline is in February. The honors college is wonderful at Tech; I highly recommend it. I’m aiming to do the Early Acceptance program through the honors college my junior year since I didn’t know about UMSI in HS. The people I know in UMSI though are very grateful for the opportunity, despite the high GPA requirement.

Yes I plan to stay for all 4 years. I really enjoy Tech. I don’t think it gets enough recognition as it deserves.

@redraidergial: You said: Many go to the Texas Tech Med School(which is great; don’t overlook it).

Where did you get above info? Is there any links talking about how good Texas Tech Med School is? Thanks.
