Medal Program

Just curious, if one receives the Rensselaer medal in their high school, is that person guaranteed (or pretty much) admission?

Well, I got the medal. I don't think it specifically guarantees you admission, but since whoever gets the medal in the first place is usually well qualified, there shouldn't be any problems.

Have never heard otherwise....

I mean its supposed to be given to the top science/engineering student. I would guess that teachers might not give it to "the best" but someone who wants to go to RPI...There is no reason RPI couldn't reject someone if they wanted, so I wouldn't blow off the application, but yeah you're pretty much guaranteed admission.

Note that it is given to "a" top science/math student, not "the" top student. It's up to the discretion of the HS counselor who awards it.
RPI budgets 25% medalists, so it's a program they encourage.
I don't think they publish the stat of % awardees who end up enrolling at RPI.
