Is Media Study(Mass Communication) at UCB competitive?

My flatmate seems to do pretty well in it and he spends an inordinate amount of time playing his PS3, drinking, getting stoned and hanging out with his fraternity brothers. Competitive? I can't claim firsthand knowledge, but from what I have witnessed, it doesn't appear so.

Hehe, I can imagine that.

But what I meant to ask was is it competitive to get in (admission wise). I was told that even after UCB admits you, you still need to apply for the major to get in. Maybe, that's how it works for all department?

yes, it is.

Like how competitive?

how about 4.0 GPA in all classes taken prior to transfer?

It's hard to get any more competitive than that! lol

media studies i think is similar to communications major at other UCs, and if you check the average gpas for those, you can get a sense, but check if their these two are similar

Why are communication majors so competitive?

It seems that the job market for that major is not even pleasant. What do you do with that major? Advertising, PR, media industry, publishing?

It's listed as an impacted major, so yeah, it's competitive but probably less competitive than economics. I recall Cal students on this forum describing it as a "fluff major." It's an easy major (compared to business, engineering).... probably why it's so popular.
