Medical Insurance

How much is the mandatory medical insurance plan at Columbia?

If you have an acceptable health plan through your family, you don’t need to buy the Columbia insurance.

once i turn 18 or 19, i wont :/

Check with your parent(s), who can check with the plan’s administrator. My two sons, 18 and 20, are still covered under my employer’s health care plan. Even if you’re no longer covered at 18 or 19, the plan may have an option to continue to include you, at a fee. Then you can compare the fee against the Columbia plan (assuming someone can answer your question). Good luck!

The fee is charged to all full-time students in order to provide them with basic medical insurance throughout the academic year. Students having comparable medical insurance of their own may elect to waive this fee. Waiver forms may be obtained by calling the university insurer, Chickering Claims Administrators, at 800-859-8471. For additional Health Service and Medical Insurance information, please call the Health Service Enrollment Office at 212-854-7210 or click here to visit their Web site.

$1,638

…“ish”

If you are covered under your parent’s health insurance then MOST plans will continue to cover you as long as you are a full-time student.

You should definitely make sure of this but it’s pretty common from what I understand.

But some people aren’t covered that way. Example, I’m self employed and have to pay for my own insurance, as well as my family’s. My daughter is on her own policy altogether, not affiliated with anyone else, or any company (and it stinks, by the way!). Just FYI. Or perhaps OP gets Medicaid? Maybe that stops when you’re over 18? Must be some reason OP says they won’t be covered. But it would be a darn shame to be mistaken and pay all that money for nothing. Or maybe they’re international…don’t you HAVE to take the insurance then?

i am on medicaid^

“$1,638” <— is this for one year? one semester? thats alot :/

Pretty sure you HAVE to have insurance, one way or the other.

Have you gotten a fin.aid. decision yet? Seems to me if you are on medicaid then they will take that into consideration…if they didn’t then write them a letter and fax it to explain the situation.

Yes Skraylor, of course they must have coverage. They just want to know how much it is if they aren’t covered. And medicaid does stop at age 18. To OP: I just found the dollar figure on their website, it’s easy to look up. This price seems to include summer session, dunno if it’s possible to drop that. You’d really have to contact them. To see prices…look on left, click “Premiums”.

I’m sure you’ve already done this but make sure to check with your state, to see if you’re eligible for any transitional type programs such as Family Healthcare Plus. Otherwise, yeah…this would have to be included in your Cost of Attendance.

What? When I was in high school I didn’t know you HAD to have coverage. I’m not sure that’s common knowledge so it was worth stating. And pretty sure I didn’t question anything about medicaid. Read a little closer. Or write more clearly.

i did get financial aid (54k/year), but does this cover medical insurance?
