Medical issue going to ruin my chances?

I have been working extremely hard this year (junior year) in order to keep my GPA up and get involved with some ECs in order to have a good shot in the admissions "game". Everything was going fine and according to plan until I found out that I will have to have surgery within the next few months. I asked how long I would be out of school, and the doctor said assuming everything goes well it would probably be a couple of weeks.

The problem is, my classes are tough and I was seriously behind a week or two ago after missing only one day...I can't imagine missing weeks of school. It would be extremely difficult if not impossible for me to make everything up, and I'm sure that my grades would take a major hit. The thing is, this has to be done soon and I probably can't wait until the summer. I am trying to get it scheduled for a school break, but they said that would be very difficult to do.

Is this going to ruin my chances at getting into a good school? What else can I do?

Thanks

i got mono 2 weeks into my senior year, basically the busiest/most important time of my highschool career, and was out for 2 weeks. its stressful thinking about all the work i need to make up but all my teachers were really understanding, and my guidance counselor amazed me with how much she cared and how hard she worked to make sure i wasnt too stressed..shes also going to write a thing in my letter of reccomendation about me getting sick at the worst possible time but being able to bounce back. teachers understand and so do colleges, that your health is the most important thing. get your surgery and take it as an opportunity to just take a break from school. you'll be fine, especially since you have plenty of time to worry about college, since youve only just started your junior year.

Thanks for your advice...I guess I'll just have to hope for the best!
