Medical Issues

In 10th grade I had a severe (emphasis on severe!) bout of mono that caused my GPA to drop from a 3.7 to a 3.1. Though in junior year I did get a 3.7 again, my cumulative GPA is a 3.5.

Everyone tells me that colleges will take this into consideration, but I can't help but think that colleges would much prefer to take the kid with a 3.7 than the kid with the 3.5 that should have a 3.7 if it wasn't for certain circumstances. Will colleges consider this and treat me as if I have a 3.7?

Also, I'm only applying to small liberal arts school (Macalester, Whitman etc).

i'd say apply to colleges you want to go to... you always have place to explain your low gpa in your essay...

Write about your battle with the disease and how you came out a better person. Maybe even write one of the essays on it. If you treat it as another shade of your person instead of an excuse, it may not hurt too much at all.

Have you GC document your situation as a separate note to include with your recommendation. If you chose to address it on your own, don't do it in a way that comes off whiny or woe is me
