Its gotten to the point where i'm so sick i cannot go back to school. The surgery i need to fix my little "problem" probably won't happen until halfway through the fall semester. As of right now, i can only do small things around the house without being in pain. I get very little sleep, and when i do sleep i crash for hours at a time.

My questions for you are:

Should i take a medical leave? I'm currently signed up for 18 credits and planned on living in the dorms.

If i take a medical leave, is it possible that i can take online courses? I ask this because i know i will not be able to work during this time and that i have had experience in taking online courses (i was homeschooled for my last 3 years of highschool in an online school and it wouldn't be to hard for me to do so).

If you take a leave now, before school starts, it usually works out a lot better than if you start and then stop.

Some schools have a lot of hoops to get back in (proof of working 6 months), some even require reapplying, but in your case, since you would take the leave before starting as a freshman, I think it would probably be fine.

Is your problem chronic or will the surgery fix it? No need to answer, but that can affect the course of things too.

Taking online courses is a great idea, but with your scenario, I would suggest one or at the most two.

Just over a year ago, my stepson had to medically withdraw from his college. He had already moved into the dorm, but classes hadn’t started, yet. We’d already bought all his books and things for the dorm. Then had to move everything out, return the books (purchased from various internet sites), and work with the college to get the medical withdrawal. All of this while trying to take care of him.

It seems to me that you will be far better off to defer starting, rather than go through all of that. You and your parents don’t need the extra stress before your surgery.

That first semester, he took one community college course that was held at his old high school. The second semester, he carried 9 hours at the community college. Next Friday, he’ll finish his second summer course back at his original college. He has gotten a scholarship reinstated as he will be full time at the end of this month.

Your intended college, as suggested by capenn15, above, will be the ultimate source about readmission or deferred admission until next year. They can also give you advice about what courses they would give credit for. Good luck in your journey and in your surgery!

I called the school and found out that they have online courses. Instead of taking a ‘full’ medical leave, i think i’ll take a few (4) classes online (not only to keep me busy, but to also keep me enrolled). :)
