What job in the medical field would be in a hospital between surgery and an office job? Surgery might be too intense or difficult for me but an job in a doctors office seems way too boring. Is there any job that is in a hospital but that is a medium between the two?

What about surgery makes you think it’s too intense?

There are lots of things that are hospital based that don’t include clinic - critical care (both adults and kids), neonatalogy, emergency medicine, crisis psychiatry (has different names different places - but deals with patients with acute psychiatric illnesses with focus on short term stabilization), or even just general medicine, geriatric or pediatric hospitalist.

I guess what I want to know is what “intense” means to you.

In all actuality though, if you are anything other than a 3rd year medical student, your question is not that important - you simply don’t have the experiences necessary to make an educated decision. While many people have an idea of what being in clinic is like from their personal experiences of being a patient, most people don’t have a clue what being on inpatient wards is like. Until you’ve done both, you really won’t know what you like and what fits. So just wait until you’ve got until that point.

Yes I know that there’s no way of picking my specialty now because I have not been exposed to that environment but I just wanted to get an idea of some medical jobs that might interest me.

I’m very interested in cardio thoracic surgery but I feel like every pre-med I talk to is initially interested in surgery because of the excitement, so might interests may not be genuine either. I guess its the fact that any little mistake you make in an 8 hour surgery could end the persons life is what makes me uncomfortable, but I guess there’s no way of knowing my abilities or inabilities now.

Anyway, thank you for the information it was helpful, especially to keep the motivation to be pre-med knowing there are tons of other good medical jobs out there.
