TsangBokyan, is there a reason you didn’t apply? Also, in your opinion, do you think UCLA or UCSD is the best choice if I want to go to Stanford Medical School?

When you become a doctor, what ultimately matters is not small differences in schools, but your competence and your bedside manner. If I was offered UCSD SOM, I’d take the bird in hand rather that two in the bush.

D is waiting for replies from several BSMD programs–most are very competitve and no. 1 reason for acceptance is motivation to become a doctor. UCSD medical scholar is by invitaion only and less motivated ( like some bloggers here) did not turn application in.
UCSD SOM only takes less than 10 a year into this program, but it’s worth acceptance because :
- SOM of SD ranks high
- Californians who love it here will not have much choice for BSMD ( only USC has it, and a few Caltech/SD SOM scholars). If you don’t like snowry weather for 7/8 years out East, thsi is too good a chance to pass.

For those who aim higher ( like Stanford Med, Harvard, JHU ), good luck to your endeavors cuz it you know the competition and uncertainties to get into top schools, you’ll treasure a guaranteed place at any school!

I thought UCSD’s Medical Scholars Program accepts 10-12 applicants/year?

jsb38: i counted the pix of scholar site and came up with less than 10/yr. Whatever the exact no., U are up against the best of the best in motivation, ec, personality outside academics ion California-- a state which itself is very competitive already. Many scholar applicants will have safeties in, yes, the likes of Berkeley Regents, other BSMD offers, Caltech or MIT, and even likely letters or offers from HYPS. It’s not hard to figure out the chances…

ucsd accepts 12 per year out of historically about 300 applicants (although i wouldnt be surprised if there were alot more this year)

i didn’t turn it in because i’ve decided to go into the research field. i have a weird fascination with the endocrine… haha

and honestly simba, if you even get into an accredited med school you’re doing great. i think you should ask that question when you start applying to med school, as you would have had more experience.

@slorg, my ap bio teacher has sent two students into this program (accepted). he said that his latest (a couple years back) is bound to go to their med school because of all the opportunities in the summer and such. however, he may be wrong.

I didn’t apply because this year in IB Biology 2 HL (2 year course), we recently started anatomy/physiology of human body, and I realized that I am MUCH more interested in molecular/micro biology than on the macro-scale. The difference is earlier I would always eagerly look forward to Biology class every day, to now where I almost dread it.

Therefore I concluded that if I do end up going into the field of biology, it’s going to be research at the molecular level.
It’s not because of a lack of motivation, Dofbsmdapp. Think before you judge.

Thanks for all the help! :)

@TsangBokyan
Why do you think the number of admitted students will increase this year? I would think decrease, with the economy…

eunit: i don’t mean motivation to be in a good college and do research or w/e, i mean motivation to really really want to become a doctor at this stage of HS. Don’t get me wrong.
UCSD sent out invitation based on statistics alone, and the responders may choose other priorities over becoming a Med Scholar. For others like NW HPME or most BSMD programs, committment is the utmost priority after test/GPA statistics are fulfilled. Nevertheless, it is a painful grinder, and only for the strong-willed. Good luck to everyone in finding u r own path.

Anybody received a phone call or email yet???

Not yet. It could be tomorrow. Good luck.

it should be tomorrow afternoon!! good luck to all who applied! :)

Any news? :)

I haven’t gotten a call nor an e-mail. Has anyone else?

Neither. I’m very nervous!

No, I haven’t gotten either yet. I got the email yesterday that said they would call if you will be selected to interview, and email if you will not. But so far, no news.

Why would they send us an email that only creates apprehension and uncertainty? I’d much rather have just found out I got rejected through a single email, sans one that tells me to squander my day waiting for a call that never came. :(

They were supposed to get back to us by 3…I’m guessing that since I haven’t heard anything I’m not in.

Has anyone been called?

don’t think so. the work day might already be over for them, so let’s hope they don’t push it back any farther than tomorrow. does anyone know if the size of the applicant pool this year is still around 200-300? maybe they received more this year, or just had a lot of really qualified applicants.
