Hey, I was reading through a US News World Report book on medical school acceptance rates, and it really surprised (and intimidated) me. UCLA Medical School accepts only 4.0% of the people who apply, for example. UCLA undergrad accepts 25% for comparison.

What I am interested in is the acceptance rates to UCLA medical school for applicants with specific GPA and MCAT cutoffs. For example, the acceptance percentage of applicants with an overall and science GPA of 3.9+ and an MCAT score of 38+ (this is what I hope to achieve).

I get the impression that the top medical schools only accept really unique people who have felt a calling for medicine for their whole lives. I fear that when I apply to med school in 4 years, I'm just going to be another cliched applicant who thinks he's unique and passionate, but comes across as fake. :(

one. GPA and MCAT are only useful for passing you through the primary app, and thus are just academic qualifiers. afterwards, secondaries and interviews matter much, much more.

two. do you have any idea how hard it is to maintain a 3.9+ GPA in the sciences?

three. have you taken a look at MCAT practice exams? do you realize that anything above 35 is considered stellar, and will probably get you through primaries at any med school (if they're coupled with a decent 3.5+ GPA).

four. if you still try to attempt a 38+ MCAT and 3.9+ GPA, do you plan to have any social life at all?

Don't forget that an A- is a 3.7...so for a 3.9 you'd need like mostly A's with a few A-'s haha. But yeah, if you really wanna strive for that good luck! I'll be happy if I manage a 3.7 :P

First of all this is not business or law, the med school you go to doesn't really matter as long as its in the US (i.e. no Caribbean). Secondly, dont focus on getting into ONE medical school, especially one like UCLA.

+1 million... this is just setting yourself up for disappointment. Med school admissions is a huge crapshoot. hell you could even do it through the caribbean - there will just be a lot more working against you in residency apps.

Overseas programs are considered last resorts. They usually offer subpar training, high tuition, low scores on the USMLE exams, and difficulty getting back into a U.S. residency.

Basically, don't do it unless you absolutely can't get in anywhere else.
