Medical School Admissions Question

Hi everyone!

Sorry if I frustrate everyone with my noobish knowledge ( :P ) of the admissions process. I know that after Undergrad, you go to Med school. But what's after that? Can anyone explain to me what an internship and residency is? And do you have to apply to different schools for this? I'm so confused :D

Bump…

check out norcal’s residency thread

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Residency_(medicine)

Internship used to be more separate and distinct, but is essentially just the first year of residency now.

The first two years of most med school programs have the basic science work. The third and 4th years you do clinical rotations. Sometime during the 4th year you need to select a speciality (internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, OB/GYN, etc…). At that point you apply to a residency in that speciality. You will then “match” with a program. Match day is a single day each year where ALL med students in the US find out where they have matched. That means they will find out where they will do their residency. The internship year is the first year of a residency.
