I’m in quite the situation at the moment. I medically withdrew from Emory University with two weeks left in school. At the time, considering what I was going through I assumed it to be the best decision along with my primary care physician and OUE advisor. Throughout this process, I spoke with the Office of financial aid and received some very vague answers as to what would happen to my full ride. My OUE advisor seemed to think that it would still be intact given that I provide written documentation to the Office of Financial Aid upon my return (I’m taking a semester off). However, I’m not sure at the moment. My family is currently afraid as we can’t afford it and if my aid isn’t still intact, I’m looking at either having to take out loans or transfer to a cheaper university. I have emailed the Office of Financial Aid once more but likely won’t get a reply until next week.
No one can answer the key question here other than Director of Financial Aid. “Seemed to think” is not good enough. With health issues at stake, you did what was safest. You should make sure you get good documentation from your doctor while he has this fresh in his mind and keep your OUE advisor in the loop too. But the main person here is the Fin Aid Director.
Why didn’t you take incompletes? or were you failing?
Definitely get the documentation.
Two of my teachers were leaving the school so incompletes weren’t an option. Also, I was told that taking a medical leave would stand a better chance at saving my financial aid by an advisor.
I am sorry you are going through whatever it is that you are going through. Taking care of your health is the most important thing right now.
Email the financial aid office to ask about your full ride. It’s best to get that in writing. Is your aid merit or need based? If it’s need based & your financial situation hasn’t measurably improved, I would think your aid would be similar when you return.
