Medicine at JHU Questions

Do you have to apply to the premed program at JHU? For example, at Georgetown premed is a competitive major to get into so at Hopkins is that the same thing, and if so, is there no way I can become a doctor or a dentist since I can’t talk to the premed advisors? If I do have to get into the premed department specifically, what are my chances given my stats below. (assume ED)

I’ve heard Hopkins is extremely tough for premeds. Someone told me that it’s difficult just to get a 3.3!! So because it’s so hard, doesn’t that mess us up for med/dent school since our GPA sucks even though we might ace the MCAT or DAT?

If I show interest in medicine and dentistry (examples are at very bottom of resume), does that:
a. Help with admission into the premed program since I’m showing I like medicine?
b. Harm me because I’m showing interest in two different fields, albeit they’re related?

How can I improve my chances because I’m anticipating my cumulative GPA to drop down to a 3.7, and my SAT/ACT scores really aren’t looking very good (around 1950 SAT, 28 ACT), even though I’m trying really hard to improve? Will my ECs make up for some of it, or what?

wow thats a lot of questions and a long post. Sorry, but I just threw this out there so that hopefully some of you will be able to help me.

start of resume:
*I am an Asian Indian Male

*class rank UW right now = 38/515. Weighted = 30/515 (will go up because not many kids have taken hard classes yet)
*IB Diploma Candidate (to be)

*(I will run for school officer so I could get more leadership positions there, and I might be able to get a leadership position in Speech and Debate just as an FYI)

Possible Hooks:
-showing interest in medicine/dents
-Going to a pathology seminar
-Working with OHSU on a dentistry project (will do it this year)
-Job shadowing orthodontist
-Planning on taking a Health Careers class at my school
-URM-although I dunno if Indians are under represented at JHU
-ECs may help make up for some parts I lack? I dunno about that for sure though.

Right now I get about a 1920-2050 on the SAT, 26-30 on ACT according to Practice Tests for SAT, and the PLAN (it’s like the PSAT for SAT except the ACT version) on ACT. I’m trying super hard to get AT LEAST 2100, but its proving to be extremely difficult for me

Thanks for your help.

There is no pre-med program to apply to at Hopkins, you can major in anything and simply follow the pre-med track.

Someone lied to you, the average GPA for the fall of 2005 was a 3.4 something. Humanities average GPA was a 3.51, engineering was a 3.35. I haven't seen the latest transcript guides for last semester

And Indians are definitely not a URM at Hopkins or at most top colleges for that matter (unless you're Native American/Indian not Asian/Indian)

where did you hear that about georgetown?

I don't think "premed" is a major at Georgetown: http://college.georgetown.edu/programs/premed/index.html
