hi. my stats are below (not very good, but i am retaking almost everything, and i usually improve a lot). i would really appreciate anyone giving me my chances.
I attend a semi-private, boarding school that does not rank or provide gpas.
GPA: n/a but it would prob. be low around 3.1
SAT:1960 (700M, 650CR, 610W) i think i can pull my CR and W by at least 100pts.
ACT: 29 (i am also retaking)
SATIIs: havent talken these yet

ECs:
freshman year: math team, i won numerous awards
Soph: varsity softball, Habitat for Humanity member, Mu altha theta, member of Northwestern Medical Explorers,
Junior: Fall Wing Guide ( leadership role in wing), secretary for Northwestern Medical Explorers, Habitat for Humanity member, traveled to France for schol trip
Senior: I plan on continuing H4H. I cannot cont. North.Med.EX. for travel reasons but I will be a member of Future Doctors.
ummm, i think im missing some ECS
soph-senior year, i have done 3hrs of workservice a week
(volunteer work for school)
also i have 100+hours community service
i have had a lot of travel experience to foreign countries
will be taking AP for AB calc senior year, and maybe 1 or 2 other APs
i realize my gpa/class rank put me at a disadvantage
my grades junior year were consid. worse than most
but i will have amazing recs and very good essays
what do you think?
i appreciate any advice you can give

also i am interested in pursuing medicine. Are there any special premed prgrams at UW? also, im an outofstater...are there good merit scholarships or help with tuition?
any additional info would also be great!
thanks!!!

You know what? Thank god there is someone out there who might be going out on a limb applying to UW, not some kid who wants to impress everyone with their perfect GPA and high test scores and stuff. At least you might not get in, but it's a breath of fresh air to find someone who isn't totally cocky about the stuff they've accomplished, like certain others who have 4.0's and 2400 on SATs and are asking "what are my chances of getting into UW". THANK YOU.

no problem. i go to a school where many of my friends are going off to the ivies...and if i had maintained my gpa i would be too (also if i had that kind of money) i have taken the hardest classes available but i did think the act and sat as kinda a blowoff (a mistake im fixing) i attend one of the best high schools in the nation. so ive sat next to some of the "best and brightest" also and ive seen them and teachers look at me once and decide i wasnt worth the effort...(only white, blond at a table of all diverse students and white males) that is obviuosly not the case all the time since the majoriy of students and teachers are amazing. but i have had it done and i let other personal problems interfere with my grades.
sorry for ranting, its just that with senior year approaching it kills me that the only thing that really separates me from the accepted is a number that i feel is meaningless after going through the system
i already know i can go to uiuc and some other great univ.. but i would really like to attend UW if possible

thanks. btw, do you know anything about medicine at uw?
like is it better to do undergrad at a place like uiuc and then try to go to uw or uw undergrad?
thanks for your help

I think what will be more important is how you do on your Medical school test and how you've done on your core college courses and your interview. Your HS stuff is really just to get you to the next step, med school is the one after that. What you do in the next 4 will determine MS.

Quick thought and it sounds terrible but here goes..

When you get to college make sure you aren't killing yourself with unnecessary hard classes outside your core studies. You have to switch your thinking process a bit from HS. In HS you want to take as tough as you can across the board, it helps you get in. In college taking nocore classes that are really hard can take study time away from the core group of classes you need for MS.

do you mind me asking what state you're from? because at my orientation there was this guy who didn't know that the uw school of medicine doesn't accept students from all states and i think it might have caught him by surprise. THey mainly accept residents of washington. Then the neighboring states of oregon idaho and montana (not sure if i missed one).

The UW school of Medicine is ranked #10 in the country. I believe the medical school gives higher priority to people from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and Washington.(I think)

wait im a little confused.
could i do my undergrad at like uiuc and then apply to UW medicalo school or do they llimit admissions to strictly WAMI residents?

They take students from other regions but hold a majority of spots for students from Washington. What you should do is visit their website and maybe ask them directly. They're nice people. :) don't be afraid.

I always thought the same as OpiefromMayberry but at my orientation one of the academic advisors said they usually only accept WAMI residents unless you have an exceptional application. They also handed out a paper that talked about the acceptance rates to the med school, dentistry school etc. And it said something along the line that "over 500 (maybe 600?) students applied to the UW School of Medicine and only 100 washington residents were accepted."

Well I would think it is a given that you are competiting in an ever smaller pool of talent. You have to do well in your core and m test and interview to get in the door. They do take out of staters, but if all the same... homestate wins. They are not going to turn down exceptional talent from out of state to take a lesser talented in stater.
