Medicine + Journalism/IR

I am a senior in high school, and I've been thinking about possible career options. I know it is way, way too early to set my goals and ambitions down in stone, but I want to know if it's possible to pursue my current interests in the future. Right now, I have a strong interest in both international relations and medicine (well, more like chemistry.) I would like to apply my knowledge of international relations to journalism. I would also like to pursue a medical degree, if not an MD/PhD. If I were to get a Masters in IR or Journalism first, will my chances of entering a competitive MD/PhD program be lowered? In other words, is there any way I could pursue a degree in both fields? After getting the two degrees, I'm planning to join some international organization to improve health care in backwards countries by making the local governments more aware of the state of their health care systems, which is where my IR/Journalism skills might come in. (If not this, at least do something that allows me to combine both my skills somehow.) Are my goals too unrealistic? Any advice or insights will be helpful.
