Medicine vs Investment Banking

I am confused and happy right now. Happy because I think I have finally realized that business is my calling, and confused because I don't remember why I dismissed business and chose medicine in the first place. Please empty all of your reasoning ammo, business supporters, and reassure me that I am choosing the right path. I realize that I am just a rising sophomore at the moment, but whatever decision I make right now is going to impact the rest of my high school career. If I chose medicine, for example, I would spend summers doing medical research, but that would be pointless if I went with business. Please be as thorough as possible in your responses. Thank you :)

Why do you need reassurance from strangers over the internet? If you think business is your calling, then trust your instincts.

But also consider why you want to go into business. Have you had any prior experience with business? If you have, and you liked what you did, stick with business but be open-minded to other options too. You might discover something you enjoy more. If you haven’t had any previous experience in business, I would seriously reconsider your decision because you seem pretty set on this idea. Business might not turn out to be what it seems for you (perhaps like your stint with medicine) and then what? Where would you turn if you didn’t leave yourself room to change your mind?

My advice is to take advantage of any business-related opportunities that your school or community offers you, if you haven’t already. Try it out and see how it goes, but keep your options open in case you don’t like it. And if you do, then you know what you want to do and what you gotta do.

Also, I would suggest investing your time in a few diverse activities so you will have a feel for everything your community offers you and potential career paths that may lead you to.

You don’t sound too confident in your decision, and that’s okay. Since you’re only a rising sophomore, you have time to see what you like. Yes, building your extracurricular resume may be difficult if you dabble in everything (don’t do that), but try a few different things and go from there.

Your decision right now may easily be changed in one week, as easily as you were swayed from medicine to business. There is no urgent need to determine “the rest of your high school career” and beyond, because your future is not set in stone based on what you think when you’re fifteen.

Keep your options open so you’ll have something to fall back on, but if you know business is what you were born to do, go for it. Good luck.

Hey Sheen, I found something just for you:

Do whatever you want in high school. When you’re interviewing for jobs in college, employers won’t give a s*** about what you did in high school. You’re not supposed to put anything on your resume from pre-college (unless you started your own business or something like that, of course).

it sounds like you just want the job that will make you the most money, since the two are completely unrelated. just do something you enjoy. i know it sounds crazy, especially on this forum.
