I think you have a really really good chance! The upward grade trend is a really big positive and your ACT score is by no means mediocre. I got in OOS with a 3.49 uw GPA, but I also never received anything lower than a B-. You should be able to get in especially with the legacy and instate status.

I’m not sure. I’m leaning towards saying it is a reach, but the turn around is pretty dramatic and might be able to make up for the low overall GPA. Your extracurricular activities are also very good, and will no doubt help you in the admission process.

If this was a couple of years ago I would have said that it is a guaranteed match, but because UofM is getting much more competitive and shifting to out of state applicants, they might end up choosing someone with a better GPA.

You have a decent shot because of your solid EC’s and your upward trending GPA. I know they like to place more weight toward the end of your later school years so you should not be held back because of your freshman year GPA. In fact, they used to take out freshman year gpa before they recalculated your cumulative two years ago but they changed it. Still, it goes to show they don’t care much for freshman year GPA.

Bump! I’m really nervous now; I was just rejected at UPenn and Cornell, and I have been waitlisted at NYU and UChicago. Michigan is the only school left! More opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I am in a similar situation. I too own a registered corporation and financial consultation firm which makes a little less than yours (60-70K, though we own two patents and the product we are launching in the summer is set to grow exponentially). I wrote my essay about how I become an entrepreneur after my father passed away unexpectedly and its positive effect on me. My GPA is the same, and my SAT is just a bit above yours.

You’re in state, and I think if you show interest, you’ll get in. Good luck!

Not to make you feel bad but for all the juniors out there, this is an example of why you really need to apply to a safety school. Although I am a little surprised that OP did not get in to NYU, it was more of a match than a safety school. OP would have been better served to apply to MSU as a true safety, but hopefully with his great ECs and his upward trend to his grades he will get in.

I applied to a lot of safety schools, and am not expecting Michigan especially since I’m OOS. I like Pitt, and I’ll go there if I don’t get in here. As far as the OP goes, he has some legacy and instate, so with demonstrated interest in essays, etc. you should get in.

I’m glad to hear you applied to MSU. I understand that you don’t want to go there and I do think you have a reasonable chance of getting into UM. But its good that you have a back-up if UM does not work out.
