So I'm applying RD for Medill (since it's easier to transfer out than transfer in) and I was wondering how good my chances are. Even though I've always been a good writer, I only just joined my school's newspaper this year as a sportswriter so that's basically all the journalism experience I have. I'm guessing I can probably get into Weinberg but I'm not sure about Medill. How heavily does admissions weigh high school journalism experience, and what if I don't already have a future field of specialty in mind (e.g. magazine journalism)? Should I apply to Weinberg instead?

If you only want to do journalism, then do not plan to apply to WCAS and later transfer- it isn't at all a sure bet. If that's why you want NU, you should definitely apply directly to Medill. And yes, journalism experience is a big factor I'd imagine.

I definitely agree with dfleish; don't apply to WCAS if you hope to transfer to Medill, because I've heard it's really hard to do.

As far as journalism experience goes, I would imagine that it gives you an edge. A year is better than nothing, and if you can supplement that experience with a quality essay in your NU application - something that shows your potential as a writer - then there's no reason you shouldn't apply confidently to Medill.

If you truly want to attend NU and feel more secure about applying to WCAS than Medill, though, apply to WCAS. But just be prepared to accept the fact that you may have to be content with an english major (or whatever you'd prefer) rather than a journalism major.
