Mediocre first semester? Transferring?

I just finished my first semester of college with:
Chemistry I - A-
Pre Calc - B-
Physics 101 - B+
Latin - A
English - A
16 credit hours

3.48 GPA

Schedule for coming semester:

Chemistry II
Calculus I
Physics I (calc based)
latin II
philosophy
17 credit hours

Taking Calculus II over the summer

Chance of getting into UMD, UMinn - Twin Cities, Penn State for chemical engineering? I'm a physics major at a state university that does not offer engineering. Intending to apply for transfer as a junior.

Off topic but not totally unrelated question: Would undergraduate research in university's physics department make my transfer application more impressive?

I appreciate any feedback

You will have to apply early in the next semester in order to transfer by next fall. This means that you won’t have the time to get any meaningful boost out of a research experience that can only start in January. Do it if you are interested in it not for the application.

If you are planning to spend a second year at your current school before transferring then it might help a bit but the most important aspect of your application is how well you do in Calculus and Physics. Chemical Engineering is very heavy in physics.
