GPA: 2.96 UW (2.57 gpa first quarter of Senior year... ouch)
ACT: 28 (29 superscored, if they do that)
-Writing: 34
-Reading: 31
-Math: 26
-Science: 25

Extra-Curriculars:

-Executive Producer of school TV show. Run the class/put the show together/etc
-Technical Director of the Psychology Journal (the only student-led Psychology journal in the country... maybe world? Counts as a science internship)
-Technical Director/Photoshop and Video editor of Yearbook
-Directed class of 2010 graduation video

how much does Syracuse take these extra-curriculars into thought? I'm interested in majoring in media studies/mass communications and I hope they'll look at my extra-curriculars and see how serious I am about media/technical stuff. But of course, my less than stellar GPA is definitely going to be a problem. What are my chances for Newhouse?

Look at the website below. In general (not for Newhouse) you appear to be in an area where you will get in, althought there is not much data. Your extras should really help - play them up in your application - maybe write your essay about the TV show or Psy journal. I’d say (IMHO) not a done deal, but a reasonable chance.

Your GPA is very low for Newhouse. When my D applied, she was specifically told that she should concentrate on taking AP and H level courses and not focus on media activities.

Wouldn’t exactly call those “excellent extracirriculars”- they are strong but not that strong. GPA will hurt but you still have a chance to get in.

I would agree, that Newhouse is going to be really tough with your GPA. In addition, not having a strong start to Senior year is going to hurt you as well. I would definitely have a back-up option.

One more thought, have you looked into Ithaca? Not sure if their requirements are lower, but they have a very good comm school in your area of interest.

^^their requirements may be lower but an ED application to Park School would have helped…

to the OP: make sure you have a second choice school put down for Syracuse; in your case, I would look at the communication and rhetorical studies major in VPA to get your feet wet; if you do well freshman year, you can re-apply to Newhouse (or even apply for the minor)…good luck!!
