Mediocre GPA with decent SAT scores

I always hear stories about good GPA and bat SAT scores but what about the other way around?

I know a kid who had a 1490 SAT I score (yes on the new scale) and he got into UC Irvine. I know it's not a super elite school but it's still a very good school. I wondered how he got in with such a bad SAT score and he told me it's because he had a good GPA, which was 3.9 WEIGHTED. I know that's not bad, that's good, but that's not mind boggling either.

So basically here's my situation.

I have a VERY mediocre GPA. Like terrible because of 2nd semester of sophmore year. If I weighted it out for both Soph and Junior year I would have like a 3.6 WEIGHTED GPA. Yes you heard me correctly.

Let me make it clear that I am not like most of you, I am an average student.

So let's say I get like a 1900-2000 on my SAT I's (I plan to retake in Oct of Senior year).

Do you think I could get into UCI or UCR with:

GPA of soph + junior: 3.6 weighted
SAT I: 1800-1900
Volunteer at hospital for 100 hours
Other misc. volunteer things
Interact club, Indian Club, Jazz Club, active in all.
SoCal Resident-High income

Do you think I have a good shot at either?

UCR, UCI:
Match

Why? UCR accepts almost everyone who qualifies the UC GPA eligibility. I know people who have a 3.1 or 3.2 with only one or two ECs and got into UCR.

As for UCI, I expect people average GPAs of with 3.6 or 3.8 to be admitted. You will be okay with both schools. Improving to 2000+ on your SATI will deem you a safer match.

thanks a lot.
