Mediocre HS gpa...should I not even bother Ivies?

Hi. I am a freshmen looking for a sophomore transfer to Ivies. I heard that HS gpa matters a lot for soph transfers, even though college gpa is perfect. I saw some stats of those who got not so perfect gpa in HS and 4.0 in college, but got rejected to top tier schools. It seems like there is more who has great HS gpa but didn't do well in college, but still got accepted to Ivies.

I have 3.5 in HS, although I got 4.0 in senior year (did bad in fresh-sophomore). This is my weakest point. Other than this, my stats are good. I think I will have 4.0 in first semester in college. I have 1460 SAT, and some decent extracurriculars. My dream is Cornell, Brown and Columbia. Should I not even bother applying to these colleges? Thanks!

In short, no. I would advise (as I often do) waiting another year so you can put distance between you and your high school transcript as well as give yourself another shot at your school (that will also help you solidify relationships with profs for letters of rec). If you’re set on transferring this year, your GPA will hold you back some, but not enough to say you shouldn’t bother applying.

Also, I want to say this: Those who do well in high school and not so in college will generally fare worse in transfer admissions than those who have an opposite performance trend. I’m not sure where you heard the contrary, but an upward trend is much more important, especially given the usually harder and more competitive classes in college.
