My dream school tracks and highly values demonstrated interest, so I’ve been planning on going to multiple events they host. Last week, I met the dean of admissions for my area at a college fair, talked to her for a while, gave her my name, and got her business card.
I’ve registered for a presentation about this school and a few others that’s going to be in my city in a few weeks and am hoping to talk to her again. Is this a good idea? If so, how should I approach this? Any advice would be helpful, as I really want to show my interest and make a good impression without making assumptions or being overager. Also, I’m a current sophomore, so this is really early on my college search. Does that affect what I should say?
Thanks!
Honestly, just ask her questions about what she says! Have her clarify things. That sounds much better than just going up and saying, “Hey, remember me!?”
Sounds like you are really showing interest. I do not think there is any proscribed thing you should say. Talk about yourself, ask about the school…show interest and be yourself and build a relationship and enjoy yourself.
Honestly, I’d wait until your junior year to go to these events. They are not really going to focus on sophomores right now so your energies will be wasted.
Also don’t gear everything towards one school – there are tons of great ones out there.
Relax. You are only a sophomore and these events are geared towards seniors. You also need to keep an open mind and look at more than this one school.
Thanks for the input, everyone! I’ll try to think of some valid but general questions to ask.
I am only a sophomore, but as it’s towards the end of the year and the seniors have committed by now, my school’s guidance counselors have advised my class to start researching colleges, signing up for mailing lists, etc. Of course I’m not making a decision or submitting anything yet, but if I do end up applying to this school I want to get an early start on showing interest. (And maybe think about some schools before the junior/senior year rush, decide whether a school of its type really is for me.) There will also be other colleges at the presentation and I’m excited to hear about them as well.
