Meeting UCB Biology Pre-reqs?

I'm a psychology major and on Assist, it says "students are required to take only two courses from the community college, regardless of how many community college courses articulate to a single UC Berkeley course." Can someone clarify what this means? Does the aforementioned statement mean that I can get away with taking ANY two biology courses?

I'm taking Human Biology and Introduction to Biology right now, but only Human Biology is on the list of major pre-reqs. (Intro to Bio is for UCLA.) I'll have to take another biology later, but I haven't met its pre-requisites yet.

I was planning on completing all three anyway, but an exam that's worth 2 letter grades in Human Biology falls on the same day as the CHSPE - which I can't make up due to my circumstances - and my professor's not letting me arrange a separate testing day so I might have to drop. :(

Alternatively, can I drop Human Biology but take the AP exam for biology and hopefully get a 4 or 5?

Thanks in advance for answering. :)

(P.S. If it makes a difference, I'm taking Human Biology at Moorpark College and everything else from Riverside Community College.)

@ lenoradusk: You need 2 Bio courses from those courses that articulate on Assist from your CCC to UCB. For me, I had to do Human Biology and General Principles of Biology. I applied as a double major: Psych/phil to the UC’s.

I’m like 90% sure that you can’t take just any Bio course. Generally, the prereqs they deem as acceptable are what they want. You can call them and ask though to be sure or to see if they can make an exception.

I think I understand your issue. You have to take 1 more Bio class that is a prereq, but you’ll need to meet the prereqs for that bio class first. Ok. So you’ll need to take whatever prereq you need for that bio course (maybe over summer?) and then take the 2nd bio prereq for the Psych major in the fall.

Hmmm. You’re in a tricky position. I would recommend either dropping the course or rescheduling your CHSPE. Is that possible? You definitely don’t want to put yourself at risk one way or another.

I can’t answer your AP question; I never took one :p. That may be the case, I would check with your counselor.

Btw: Are you a Middle College student? I did that for a year :). If not, I really applaude you for getting ahead with community college classes now while you’re still in high school and doing AP’s. It’s actually one of the best things you can do financially and just for getting ahead. You’ll probably transfer a year or 2 ahead of your graduating class. Props to you! I just applied last fall, and I also sort of did what you’re doing along with Middle College.

You can’t just drop and take AP bio test because the AP bio score would be the equivalent of your introduction to biology course.

That’s how I understood the process, but the wording on the statement was confusing me. Thanks for clearing that up, emilsinclair. :)

I’m somewhat reluctant to drop Human Biology because that would mean I’d have a W in each of the 3 past semesters out of 4 total, which I’m guessing won’t look so hot. My counselor actually said the AP would be fine, but he also said that I could hypothetically get into UCB with a 3.4 as a psychology major.

You’re exactly right, I’m a Middle College student! I’m going to be done with the pre-reqs and IGETC after spring semester next year if the biology conundrum works out. That’s the reason I need to take the CHSPE, so I can apply to transfer. It’s possible for to reschedule the CHSPE, but only for next October. In that case, I wouldn’t get my results until about January, which is past the UC’s application period.

P.S. I hope you get accepted to UCB and UCLA!

Peterr, you brought up another statement I had a question on.

Assist says: “The Biological Science requirement is also satisfied by a score of 4 or 5 on the
AP Biology exam for only one of the biological prerequisites.”

It doesn’t specifically say the AP exam counts for a certain class, but it would make sense for it to only count for an introductory class. Also, there is no introduction to biology class that articulates from my college at all. Again, I’m in a state of confusion. Does anyone understand this?

Usually the AP score take the place of certain classes

Ala

AP Calculus B.C = Calculus 1
Ap English = English 101
AP Stats = intro stats etc

Ap bio counts for the Introduction to biology course which most college have. I have a 5 left over from high school and that was the class that it provided unit for at my C.C

I see. I often get too caught up in the technicalities of a sentence.

The question still remains, though, about UCB not having any Introduction to Biology class listed as a pre-req. The only three that are on Assist are more specialized. Intro to Molecular and Cell Biology, Intro to Organismal and Population Biology, and Human Biology. If the AP exam only counted for an Introduction to Biology course, I would think that it wouldn’t be mentioned because it wouldn’t be useful anyway.

Am I being too literal?

@ lenoradusk: I’m sorry I can’t answer your questions involving AP classes, but thanks for the good luck! lol.

Have you considered getting your GED (accepted nation-wide) instead of CHSPE (only California recognized)? That’s what I did. It’s offered multiple times a year and, in my opinion, was not difficult. I don’t know if you’re familiar with it, but it’s comprised of 5 standardized tests (English writing, math, science, social studies, and reading comp). The UC’s won’t care if you have a diploma, GED, or CHSPE, so you won’t be at a disadvantage as long as you have a good college record.

I would try to avoid 3 W’s. That’s normally the starting point for colleges to get wary. If you can, try to avoid that. If not, obviously ya gotta do what ya gotta do lol.

I hope I see you next year at UCB as a Psych major. < Exactly what I’m hoping to start this fall. Best of luck! :).

That is definitely odd i just checked the assist for your college at

Riverside and Moorpark

BIOLOGY 1A & General Biology (3)|BIOL M2A General Biology I (5)
Lecture (Cells, |
Genetics, Animal Form |
& Function) |
BIOLOGY 1AL General Biology (2)|
Laboratory |

I assume thats biology 1A and LAB that is for Moorpark so if you have the AP credit it should count for that class.

but at riverside it’s

BIOLOGY 1A & General Biology (3)|BIO 11 Introduction to (5)
Lecture (Cells, | Molecular and Cellular
Genetics, Animal Form | Biology (Majors)
& Function) |
BIOLOGY 1AL General Biology (2)|
Laboratory |

so that definitely odd should ask your school what AP Bio will count for

The GED’s actually what my sister did. I won’t be old enough to take it for a couple of years, though. (Phooey.)

Thanks for all the great help. I hope we both get to see each other at UCB in the future! :)

Thanks, peterr, I’ll definitely try to talk to someone. I once talked to Riverside and the counselor said “I’d assume so” when I asked him if the AP exam would count for any one of the biology pre-reqs. It’s a big red flag when a CCC counselor would assume anything about transfering for me.
