Does anyone know when incoming freshmen meet with their advisors to chose classes for the fall? Do I need to set up an appointment now before I arrive at Dartmouth?
Thx

I'd like to know the answer to this question also.

I will happen during orientation (you will get a packet on move in day that gives all of that information).

Be warned - don't make the same mistake I made...you will be much better off by trusting your own instincts and especially by listening to advice of upperclassmen about which classes to take than you will be by talking with your freshman advisor. I wouldve been a lot better off had i done that.

on that note, theyll typically blitz you at some point to set up an appointment. keep in mind though that you pick your courses - they dont have to approve of anything for you (actually, you dont even really have to meet with them if you dont want, but its probably a good idea to do so)

I would have to agree with bulldogbull - most likely your adviser will know squat - they're not taking the classes, they're just teaching maybe one or two in the department that you think you might maybe, possibly, if the stars align perfectly... major in (i.e. don't count on it) your best bet will be, as bulldog mentioned, talking to upperclassmen and doing some research. SA (student assembly) has a pretty useful course guide that one can use to read unedited course guides and class ratings. As for actually choosing the classes, bannerstudent (online info portal for students) will allow you to select both classes and PE's (which you really don't have to worry about, especially your freshman fall) a couple of days before commencement - most intro classes with capacity caps have around a third of the spots reserved for freshmen (as upperclassmen chose courses at the end of the spring) --- on that note though, I highly encourage you to "shop" i.e., attend multiple classes (4 or 5) your first week and then add/drop after you get a feel for the prof, receive grading policies, etc. ((and wow, I can't believe I'm actually posting on CC - I used it extensively when I was applying three years ago and I've wandered back on to procrastinate in my last two weeks of my summer internship - I'll be orienting all of you '11s come Sep. 18th though, so I might as well start handing out longwinded attempts at advice now)

How do you get the student assembly guide? hx

http://sa.dartmouth.edu/guide/

To access you have to use your dnd name and password. (dnd = dartmouth name directory ... so you can use any of your nicknames for blitz)

Thx. Sounds like good practical advice. Glad you'll be speaking at orientation.
