Meeting with Professor for PhD

Hello all,

I will be applying to Phd programs this Fall, and I have been emailing professors at the programs I'll be applying to. I just received a response from one professor as follows:

Thank you for your interest. Since you are so close, the best thing we can do is arrange a short visit for you sometime this fall. Why don't you suggest a few days in late October or early November.

I just have a few questions on this. Once I arrange a visit, should I treat the visit as if its an interview? And if so, should I show up in a full interview attire (dress pants, dress shirt, tie, etc.), or would I go with a khakis and polo kind of thing? Also, should I bring my resume along? I want to make a good impression while I'm there..

Thanks for any suggestions.

Best regards,
smpaladin

It’ll be informal setting but professors do love to meet with prospective students, especially if they’re highly competitive. They’ll want to see how serious you are about their program as well as getting to know you as a future colleague. So it’ll be a two way street as you will be trying to get in that program.

Dress up a bit but don’t need to overdo it (scrap the tie and suit). Use your best judgment with the clothes.

Carry your CV but don’t offer unless they ask for it directly or ask what you’ve done in terms of your research and you have the whole list in front of you and offer it then.

^Yep, all correct. If I can make a suggestion- come with figures prepared to describe what you have done and a clear idea of what you might want to do in connection with this professor.
