I am interested in biology with a quantitative emphasis. This may include molecular biology, structural biology, computational biology and bioinformatics, and possibly exploration of bioengineering/BME courses. For academic/industry research, not pre-med.

I loved CMU and I know its engineering and CS programs are top-notch, but I was wondering how good the biological sciences program at Mellon College of Science is, as it does not seem as esteemed as some of the other programs. I might consider doing the computational biology degree through MCS. Does anyone here have experience with this major or the biology program at MCS in general?

i say the school is good for non premed research track because the MCS seems to focus on molecular and physical sciences. I also plan on majoring in computational biology.

But if you plan on majoring in computational biology, be ready for some serious math and cs.
In high school i focused on biology only-- on molecular and genetics research – and i felt unprepared for cs part of computational biology at first. but its not too hard to get on track if you are good at computational stuff.

I dont know that much about cmu comp bio program but i think the number of undergraduates in the comp bio is pretty small (i think this is great though!)

Well Im a biological sciences major here and I have taken intro to computational molecular biology, surgery for engineers (bme…AWESOME class), physiology, etc. As long as you are taking your core bio courses you can take more comp bio courses or get a minor in BME (which I may do). The biology major prepares you for research in the real world and the labs prepare you for all kinds of quantitative analysis. A lot of premeds are bio majors but many bio majors go into research. The program for biology here is great. The best part of cmu is that all of its programs are amazing so internally transferring from one school to another wouldn’t be a bad decision.

I am strongly considering attending the Mellon College of Science as a undergraduate and I was hoping you could tell me about your experience. I am very much interested in biochemistry and biophysics but I am open to any science related major. My main goal is to get into med school and I hope to strive for the best that I can. Does the major that I take at Carnegie Mellon affect my chances in the future for med school? Also as member of the Mellon College of Science can I still minor in BME even though that is through the engineering school? How are the professor and classes? Any tips for classes that are must take or some that are best to be avoided? Are the classes challenging? How the research opportunities for a bio student. Carnegie is amazing for engineering but not much is said for it biology programs, Your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.
