Hey I posted this question in the UVA thread as well and have been getting some GREAT responses. I was hoping i could generate some discussions on this thread.

I got accepted to CMU for HSS, Psych and for UVA arts and sciences. I want to major in cognitive science/neuroscience and i wondering the following questions:

1) what sschool would offer better research opprununites?
2) what school would offer more internships/shawdowing oppurunites?

and the age old question…is CMU cognitive science program worth the money (going into med schiool w/ cog sci degree).
i’m IS for UVA (and i got my FA package today…15K…so only have to pay 9K for a year)

I’ll give it a try…disclaimer: I don’t know a whole lot about UVA, other than it is a great school - not sure about its specific strengths/weaknesses, etc. Also, since I’m not a Cog Sci major, most of my info is just hearsay.

First and foremost, from what I’ve heard, CMU Cog Sci is an excellent program; one of my friends is planning to declare. In particular, from what I’ve heard, it’s awesome if you’re interested in artificial intelligence (which makes sense, given CMU’s strengths).

The other thing is that conventional wisdom says to avoid undergrad debt as much as possible if you’re interested in med school. The other thing is maintaining a high GPA - I don’t know about UVA’s cog sci program, but at CMU you will have to take some pretty heavy math courses, such as Concepts of Mathematics, which is mainly known as a CS class and can be a big struggle for lots of SCS students. Getting an A in classes like this will not be easy!

Again, that’s mostly based on what I’ve heard, but it might give you something to think about…

Cognitive Science is GREAT here - I have a really good friend doing it and she is really smart and successful. I also really enjoy the campus life here; I’m not sure about UVA but I’m sure it’s more social and maybe a little more Greek-Oriented (whichever floats your boat)

That being said, UVA is really quite good at regular psychology, and it sounds like such a good deal financially. Honestly, I would go there if money played any role in your decision
