great reference links to bedding stuff. Thanks. (This is why I still hang around cc even though both kids are done with undergrad.)
Well, we took a good look at our memory foam mattress with the bad depressions. It really is 3 sections. The top is the comfort level of course, where pressure points are…that has completely broken down. The middle is not as broken down, and then the core which is still very firm. To try to hold off spending $$$$ for a little while longer, we flipped the mattress upside down to see what was at the bottom. The core, which is incredibly dense memory foam, is there. We are going to buy a 2.5", 5lb density gel infused memory foam topper at Sams for $198. This will serve as the pressure point top, with the firm underneath.
May seem a little weird, but we’re trying it.
One thing that surprised me when buying a mattress from a mattress store was that negotiation was expected, as with buying a car. Ugh! I hate making purchases where the price is negotiable.
Ok…I have slept on the core section of my flipped over memory foam bed for 2 nights. My back ache is almost completely gone. It really does need a high density topper for pressure point comfort, but I think we’ve found our temporary solution. I’d love if it would last a year plus.
I did email Serta about their warranty. They are sending me back to the store we purchased it from. I’m going, but I’m sure it’s a run around.
We have tuft and needle and am very happy. I think I did a review earlier in this thread.
@nottelling, you are correct. For most mattresses, there is plenty of room to negotiate. And if you’re working with a chain store, if they won’t meet your price you can always go to another location.
We actually were walking out of the Sleepys store. I had HAD IT with the stupid salesperson. Up to my eyeballs. Unfortunately we don’t live near any other mattresss places. Even the mall with Macy’s is 45 minutes away. But I was disgusted.
As we approached the front door, the salesperson was yelling “Lady, lady I think we can do something.” Honestly, if I hadn’t needed a bed asap…I would, have kept waking.
We got the mattress we liked for $699…it had price card of $1700. Idiots.
I will NEVER buy from them…again. Of course they sold out to Mattress Firm.
Ughhhh – stories like that make me crazy! It’s clear I got ripped off by negotiating only a few hundred dollars off on the last mattress I bought. And I wouldn’t have known to do that if the guy next to me hadn’t started negotiating with a different salesman.
I never knew one could negotiate. We’ve always purchased our from a huge, huge furniture store. I was once in a mattress firm and they didn’t have what I was looking for. The guy was yelling stuff at me about the beds as I was walking out the door. It was weird and creepy.
There is a Freakeconomics podcast about the economics of mattress stores I listened too a few months ago. Apparently the markup on mattresses is huge. It is worth listening too if you are in the market. Google should find it.
@conmama we purchased this [gel mattress from Sam’s](http://www.samsclub.com/sams/night-therapy-elite-10-mygel-premium-memory-foam-mattress/prod6480126.ip?sprodId=prod6480126) for DS last summer. He says it’s still very comfortable.
We have Tempur-Pedics at both our homes, going on about 12 years now. We negotiated to buy the second one with the price we paid for the first one. No complaints from us and we both sleep so well!
So I need to amend my post about Select Comfort as a company. I wrote a letter to the CEO and got a phone call today from someone at the company. I told her the story, and she asked me a bunch of questions (laundry practices, etc.). I told her if the sheet was that sensitive to laundering, the sales people should have made it clear. As it ends up, on the back of the package, it does say wash in cold water with mild detergent. I’ve always used mild detergent, but have washed in warm water. Still, warm water (not hot) should not have led to the disintegration of the fitted sheet as it did.
Anyway, they offered to send out a new set of sheets made with 100% cotton, although I mentioned to her that I’d already replaced the sheets last week. I am also going to send a picture of the sheet where it is torn, and a copy of the letter I got from them saying my ‘review’ of their sheets was not appropriate for publication - she said she had no idea how that came about, but definitely wanted to see the email I got.
So I have a new sheet set on the way, and for that I am very grateful. I’d still say buyer beware if you purchase a Flex split king top as you will need to purchase all your sheets through them. The new cotton set I bought was around $200, but the sales person gave me $40 off the price. I just hope they last; and yea, even though they’re 100% cotton, I do still need to wash them in cold water.
Glad they got back with you. One of the reasons we went with the full split king was the worry about sheets. We can buy 2 XL twin and a king flat from anywhere.
We are way overdue for a new mattress, but will likely be moving in 3-4 years. Not knowing the layout of a future house or apartment, we’re seriously considering combined twins instead of a king, to make moving easier. The width would be equal to a king, but the length is shorter. For anyone who has done the same, what do you use as a bedframe? Do king sheets fit ok?
We have two twins in one of our guest bedrooms and can move them together when couples sleep in the room. We bought this little gadget to make it more comfortable:
https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/instant-king-twin-bed-bridge/1012184352?Keyword=twin+beds+into+king
And we put regular king sheets on it (as well as a king quilt).
Oh man I have to get on buying a new mattress, I can’t sleep, I’m very tired…
@kjofkw …what you need is XL twins. They are the same length as a king. Therefore putting two together you should have a normal king sized bed. You’ll have to get some sort of strap that goes around the sides to hold them together, as they’ll drift apart from movement.
@conmama I was trying to figure that out, because we will also need to get two twins to replace our king to get it up the stairs without ruining the mattress; however, a twin XL is 39" wide and a king is 76" wide seems like two twins would be 78" and maybe too big for our current frame?
Sounds like it. But I used to turn my memory foam bed 90 degrees and it was then overlapping the boxspring two inches on each side. It wasn’t that big a deal. Yours would only be an inch, nut I could see how they don’t weigh as much as a king, so would move around.
I’m resurrecting this thread because I just bought a hybrid memory foam/traditional mattress. I read the tail end of the thread back in January, but now wish I had started at the beginning, because I think I bought a bed similar to @conmama. It’s a Serta, but the newest breed, called iDirections. My mattress was 12 years old, and I was waking up every morning for the last six months with sore shoulders since I sleep on my side.
So I went to one of the big mattress stores, Mattress Warehouse, where they have something that’s likely only a sales gimmick called Bed Match, where you lie on a mattress with sensors and a computer measures your pressure points and gives recommendations for mattresses. The salesperson suggested a few different ones in this mattress line after I told her I wanted to keep it under $1,000. I have never had memory foam before and it felt good in the store. I tried several models, and the pillowtop seemed the best.
Well, now it’s been home for three nights, and it seems much firmer than it was in the store, and it’s much harder to roll over in and get out of than my old bed. I cannot figure why that is since I don’t really sink in. I had my D test it and she had the same problem, so it’s not just me being middle aged. But my shoulder pain is gone, and once I’m situated in the bed it’s pretty comfy. I can return it for a fee of $199. I’m trying to decide what to do. Do they soften up (without losing support)? Is it just getting used to memory foam? Any guidance here?
