Memory Games

What if anything else are you required to memorize other than rates and Table Salts (ie. Reef Points specifics)?

Is it really as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

Is there an advantage to having a copy of Reef Points and becoming familiar with it before I-Day?

is it as bad as everyone makes it out to be?

in a word, yes.

i guess there would be a slight advantage to having a copy of reef points, but you won't really know how to memorize it until plebe summer comes around. what you have to remember varies, but you can count on having to know the orders of a sentry, the articles of the code of conduct, the ranks and insignia of all services, enlisted and officers, various quotes and probably "the man in the arena".

Thanks

And one more thing,
by when are you supposed to know all of the Table Salts verbatim?

You will be told. They will require them a bit at a time. For example, you may be required to memorize 5 Laws of the Navy each day until all are covered.

Or, you'll be asked, not know, and get chewed out. That's usually a good sign that you need to know something. ;)

Sounds good

Thanks for your help, both of you
Very helpful sight, glad I found it

what are table salts?

Table Salt is a section of various tidbits of information found in Reef Points (the little book Plebes get Plebe Summer). All kinds of stuff in there. Some good, some weird, some hysterically funny.

Thanks....do you think that reef points are hard to remember....and do you know what consists in a chow call besides the "menu"?

Zaph...how is the cow? :-)

come on, show the newbies what we mean!

lol chow calls have the minutes til the next formation, the uniform, the officer of the watch and midshipmen officer of the watch, the menu, the professional topic of the week and major events of the yard.

MA'AM , SHE WALKS, SHE TALKS, SHE'S FULL OF CHALK!
THE LACTEAL ACID EXTRACTED FROM THE FEMALE OF THE BOVINE SPECIES IS HIGHLY PROLIFIC TO THE Nth DEGREE, MA'AM!

Why didn't you say "sir"?

MA'AM, "SIR" IS A SUBSERVIENT WORD SURVIVING FROM THE SURLY DAYS IN OLDE SERBIA WHEN CERTAIN SERFS, TOO IGNORANT TO REMEMBER THEIR LORDS NAMES BUT TOO SERVILE TO BLASPHEME THEM, SUBSTITUTED THE SUBSERVIENT WORD "SIR" BY WHICH I KNOW BELATEDLY ADDRESS A CERTAIN SENIOR SERRIPED WHO CORRECTLY SURMISED THAT I WAS SYRUPY ENOUGH TO SAY "SIR" AFTER EVERY WORD I SAID, MA'AM!

Jeez, I hated having a female striper as a platoon leader! Had to repeat that damned thing AT LEAST five times a day!

The Nth degree is an estimate of how many glasses of milk (n) are left in the carton.

Zaph, you're AMAZING. Thanks for reciting it. I remember on my honeymoon something set John off and this rendition. I thought he was completely out of his mind! Never heard of 'rates' or the like. One day, soon, father AND daughter will be able to recite them in unison! What a treat for this mama that will be!!!

p.s. Zaph...so are you gonna read your emails????

LOL! I have! :o

I'll bet what set off peskedad was, "What time is it?"

SIR, I AM GREATLY EMBARASSED AND DEEPLY HUMILIATED THAT DUE TO UNFORSEEN CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND MY CONTROL, THE INTERIOR WORKINGS OF MY CHORNOMETER ARE IN SUCH INACCORD WITH THE GREAT SIDEREAL MOTION BY WHICH TIME IS USUALLY RECKONED THAT I AM NOT, WITH ANY CERTAINTY, ABLE TO PROVIDE YOU WITH THE CORRECT TIME...

At this point, I forget the last sentence which is something along the lines of "However, if I may venture an estimation, the time is approximately <blah>."</blah>

SIR!

Hey, cut me some slack! It's been almost 19 years! :D

The Reef Points version actually requires the time to be given in "bells", but we were never required to do that, thank Goodness.

In the mid-1990's, another one was added that was nearly impossibe to READ, much less recite. How those poor plebes ever managed to do so is beyond me. The guy (or gal) who wrote that is a genius of eloqution!

Hey! I need some help from the current Mids!

Table Salt is the responses to "How's the cow?" and all that stuff, while Irish Pennants (in Reef Points) is all the tidbits like when a girl puts on a Mid's cover, she owes him a kiss, and all that, right?

Is my memory coming back, or has it still not gotten here? :o

I'm no mid (yet!) but from my constant research I know Table Salts are the responses to the questions you posted above. I have no clue about the Irish Pennants though.

P.S. is the question you are saying is impossible to remember the "Why don't you understand". I think thats the one with all the neuroscience lingo.

this mom knows what Irish Pennants are...though in these days of political correctness, I don't know how they keep that title...
they are little pieces of lint, thread, etc. that remain on your uniform and you had well better get them off yourself BEFORE your upperclassmen do.

Okay, Irish Pennants....table salt...chow calls (not what I was thinking)....
I'm learning (slow but sure)!

lol cmon...I at least knew IPs (Irish Pennants). Whenever I'm at drill for Sea Cadets, that's just about all I hear...

Irish Pennants are still in reef points, and what zaphod is referring to are random bits of naval tradition and academy knowledge you need to become familiar with, such as who are the four midshipmen whose names are on the mexican monument?
clemson, hynson, pillsbury and shubrick.
random facts such as that are what irish pennants are.

usnso - remember that I'm jest a ole country boy from West Virginia. Yawl get a "crick" in your neck, we go fishin' in 'em!

Wheelah44 - you have been so helpful. Thanks for the insight. Anything to add to Z's "laundry" list or new and improved cleaning stuff?

Also, I know time is running short and I want Sis to "enjoy" as much of her remaining freedom as possible but, outside the physical training, anything she could/should look at concerning memorization?
