Is the term nrdl (pronounced nerdle) still in use? Non-Regulation Dust and Lint?

Acronyms...... you got a love 'em! NOT! LOL!

Irish Penants are small pieces of thread that stick out from pockets, buttons, and seams. Aboard ship, an IP is a line that has been left unattended or in an unseamanlike manner.

A Russian Rope is a BIG Irish Penant on a uniform. ;)

Best way to get rid of IP's (especially on black uniforms) is to pull on them slightly (to see if they come out easily, as some will because they're just threads that were trapped during the manufacture of the garment). If they don't, DON'T PULL ANYMORE! Take a Bic lighter and BURN them off. You will find that the thread itself will burn down to the garment itself, and then go out. Be sure (especially on fabrics with synthetic fibers) that the burned/melted thread doesn't stick to the garment where it can be seen, because then you're hosed. A good alternative for the uninitiated is to trim the IP to about 1/8" with scizzors and then flick your Bic. The nice thing about burning is that the end of the IP fuses to the garment, and NEVER works it's way out again.

Just be careful, will you? I had one guy in my company burn the sleeve off his SDB blouse. Oops!
