I didn't retire. Got out as a LT.

Still doesn't answer the question: "So what qualifications do you need to become a BGO?"

I don't have the answer.

Naval Academy Information Program

The USNA Candidate Guidance Office operates a large network of former and current military officers. This program was originally conceived as a Naval Reserve program and a formula was devised for converting their efforts on behalf of USNA Admissions into “equivalent” drill points toward Naval Reserve retirement. The network operates under a USNA Instruction consistent with the Superintendent’s policy and a handbook in which the director of admissions spells out the procedures, roles, and duties. The program is officially called the Naval Academy Information Program (NAIP) and the officers who serve as Information Officers are nicknamed “BGOs.” Nowadays a BGO may be a Reserve officer, a regular or Reserve officer on active duty, an Alumnus, or a civilian non-graduate. A BGO does not have to be a USNA graduate, but we encourage Alumni to become BGO’s because it demonstrates a strong commitment to improving the Naval Academy admissions process and making Candidates’ packages readily available for review by the Admissions Board.

To become a Blue & Gold Officer, you must be recommended by your local BGO Area Coordinator, complete a self study course and open book test, and attend a week long training program.

There are three levels of BGO:

• Area Coordinator—oversees a group of BGOs in a locale.

• Naval Academy Information Officer (NAIO)—A fully qualified BGO who has attended all the training.

• NAIO Affiliate—A supporter of the Naval Academy who has been designated an affiliate by the director of candidate guidance. An affiliate assists the local BGO or is the primary Naval Academy recruiter in the community. Affiliates are those BGOs who have not participated in a training session at the Academy. They are expected to qualify as a Naval Academy information officer within two years of designation as an affiliate.

The CGO tracks about 33,000 high schools—most are assigned to a BGO. Each BGO is assigned at least twelve high schools. There are about 2,000 BGOs grouped into about 80 areas throughout the 52 states and the District of Columbia. There is also BGO coverage overseas and in the U.S. territories. Most BGOs are assigned 12-50 high schools (average about 20 schools) by their area coordinators. BGOs must support the mission of the Naval Academy and have a working familiarity with the admissions process.

In order to learn more about how you can help recruit young men and women to be naval officers through USNA, get in touch with your local BGO area coordinator or contact Ron Casey at the Alumni House (Ron.Casey@usna.com).

ooooo defeat for Zaphod!

Just kidding. Wanna be my BGO? :)

Thanks, dictator. Someone had sent me that, but I lost it.

I too had a female squad leader who would make us reply to the question, “Why didn’t you say Ma’am?” with the following:

MA’AM, “MA’AM” IS A MAMMAMVIENT WORD MAMVIVING FROM THE MAMLY DAYS IN OLDE MAMBIA WHEN MAMTAIN MAMFS, TOO IGNORANT TO REMEMBER THEIR LORD’S NAMES BUT TOO MAMVILE TO BLASPHEME THEM, SUBSTITUTED THE SUBMAMVIENT WORD “MA’AM” BY WHICH I KNOW BELATEDLY ADDRESS A MAMTAIN SENIOR MAMRIPED WHO CORRECTLY MAMMISED THAT I WAS MAMUPY ENOUGH TO SAY “MA’AM” AFTER EVERY WORD I SAID, MA’AM!
