D will be applying this fall. If she is accepted as pre-admit to Mendoza, what type of classes will she take 1st year? Can she use AP credits (she got 5’s on Bio, Chem, Physics, Calc BC, U.S. Hist, Econ, and Eng. Lit) to satisfy any of these 1st year classes? If so, would she be able to take classes from Mendoza her first year?
Good luck to your daughter! I believe the University’s policy is that credits only outside of her intended major(s) and minor(s) can be transferred. So, case-specific, her science, history, and possibly english credits should go through without a hitch, but her (micro or macro?) economics scores would not, since she will be required to take the standard, full set of classes for whichever business major she intends on pursuing (Assuming every Mendoza major requires economics courses). In other words, most AP and IB scores only count to satisfy the University requirements/courses that the student does not intend to major in.
Again, best of wishes to your daughter in this whole admissions process!
Notre Dame no longer gives any credit for APUSH. The 5 in Lit would exempt her from having to take writing and rhetoric. As far as the others, I believe she would receive University credit and would be placed in higher level courses, but I don’t believe she would be able to skip any first year or university requirements. I could be wrong, but this would be a great question for your regional rep.
A typical first year schedule for Mendoza would be something like:
- Math Course (your daughter already fulfilled this)
- Science Course (your daughter fulfilled this also!)
- Writing & Rhetoric (Fulfilled) / University Seminar (she will have to take this)
- Major Requirement - which will be Micro (although she might have fulfilled this also!)
- Elective (she could take philosophy or theology to fulfill a university requirement)
- Moreau First Year Experience
Because she has tested out of so much, I would assume that she would end up just adding in more university requirements like fine arts, literature, philosophy, or theology
Good luck!
Notre Dame is very serious about the First Year Studies (FYS) program, and keeps the focus on core requirements during freshman year. My son is a rising sophomore, and even though ND gave him 36 credits for his AP tests, he was not really able to take Mendoza business classes his freshman year. However the credits do give flexibility to have a second major and even a minor and he was able to take classes for those. ND’s FYS program is a good one, so don’t worry if your daughter does not take business classes until sophomore year.
Thanks for all the information. Go Irish!
