Men's Cross Country and Track

I was wondering how good MIT's Men's track and cross country teams were. What kind of times would someone have to get in high school in the 800 Meters and Mile to be on the team?

According to the team website (<a href="http://web.mit.edu/hwtaylor/mtfxc/index.html%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/hwtaylor/mtfxc/index.html</a>) FAQ:

"What does it take to make the team?
In order to make the cross country or track teams at MIT, the coaching staff needs to see the desire, dedication and ability necessary to contribute to the team's success. Generally, that translates to 20-24 individuals for cross country and 45-50 for track and field. If the athletes do the off season work that is asked of them, they will make the team."

Seriously, MIT is division III. The track teams are pretty good, but since it's a DIII school, they're somewhat restricted in the people they can attract.

If I were you, I'd fill out the recruit info form they have, and maybe email the coach to see what the relevant times are... but many, if not most, MIT sports will let people be on the team as long as they're dedicated and halfway decent.

what about for the more popular sports like basketball?

The basketball site (<a href="http://web.mit.edu/bball/www/recruits.htm%5B/url%5D">http://web.mit.edu/bball/www/recruits.htm</a>) doesn't really give any info that would be useful in determining how difficult it would be to make the team.

To my knowledge, all of the players on the team played basketball in high school, although I really don't know if they were the best at their respective high schools. The team is okay; they won about half their games last season (and were close on most of the other half -- all the teams in the conference are approximately on the same skill level).

Again, my advice would be to fill out the recruit info form and contact the coach. The thing to keep in mind above all is that getting into MIT is the hard part; making a team is comparably a walk in the park.

One of my good friends is going to be running at MIT this fall, he ran 4:32.21 in the mile indoors this year and 9:55 for the two-mile. Don't know his XC times, but I have a feeling he'll be one of the better runners at MIT - Nate Sharpe.

yeah, id say that he'll probably be one of the better distance runners (at least out of the freshman- im not sure how good the current team is). Im also running track next year and it looks like there are a lot of good (for MIT/DIII) runners coming in, especially sprinters/mid-distance. I think well make a pretty good team, or at least a good addition to the current one.
