My son is interested in running cross country in college. We are in VA and he loves William and Mary but having a hard time finding some other schools to consider. Running for them may be a stretch as they are a good DI school. Came across Williams and he loves the cross country program and its traditions. He wants a smaller school, woodsy campus where he can run- though not too small as his high school is almost 3,000. He has a 34 ACT w/ a 36 in reading and 35 in science. He has only run 2 years and has a low to mid 16 minute 5k. He is hoping to break 16 for his senior year.

He has an interest in science particularly Chemistry but also is undecided. Any thoughts or feedback about Williams in terms of cross country recruitment, etc. He has filled out the recruit questionnaire and has been updating the school with his scores.

We haven't visited yet and will likely in August.
Any thoughts/advice would be appreciated.

Cross-country is very good and very popular at Williams. The school is tiny, though, so if he wants something as big as or bigger than his 3000-student high school, he might find it too small.

Williams is a little over 2000 so that wouldn’t be too small. I just don’t think he wants anything that is smaller than that. I think he would like the remote setting. W & M, while being in Williamsburg, is a more sedate school than many of the other VA schools. He likes the quiet, quirky, intellectual but fun school. The tradition of Mountain Day fits him to a T. Anyway, just trying to help him find a good school where he can get a good education while continuing his passion for running. He is not a top running prospect but a decent athlete.

Sounds like he’d love Williams, honestly. And at a Div III school, he could be on the C-C team.

vahockey, he sounds like a great fit for Williams. Williams is full of runners, both casual and serious, though snow and ice adds another dimension.

Thanks that is good to know. He played ice hockey for almost 10 years so we love the ice- though he didn’t play at a high level. And love that Williams has a team and a rink. Running in it may prove to be interesting! Many schools have cut their cross country programs as it is a bottom tier sport. For him, he wants to go to a school with a team even if he doesn’t end up running for them. Williams has a very well respected cross country team with a long tradition, 100 years I believe, and is obviously a top school. Any feedback on the sciences, chemistry dept in particular, at Williams? I know it is a liberal arts school and does offer a chemistry degree. He does have an interest in chemistry as a major though that may change. Thanks for all the feedback. It’s really appreciated.

Sciences in general are excellent at Williams, some of the best among LACs of similar selectivity.
